To really really hate my job

Hatemyjob2018 · 22/01/2018 10:01

I do the most basic of tasks.
Scan this in, save it.
Rinse and repeat.
That's basically all there is to it.
Occasionally enter a sales order, occasionally call some company to chase for things they should have delivered but haven't.

I'm bored all day every day, finding myself spending more and more time on mumsnet just to pass the time.

I want to work. I want to be busy. I want to be challenged.

I can't leave/ change my role/ ect.
I'm pregnant so will be job hunting for something different when maternity leave eventually arrives, but I'm struggling to drag myself through every boring day until then.

If you are unhappy there could you search for other jobs that you might be more happy with,?

If it's a case of finding it boring, would your boss allow you to listen to a radio as you work, listening to a radio talk show can pass the time and be entertaining

Hatemyjob2018 · 22/01/2018 10:11

I will be once on maternity. Nobody will hire a pregnant lady!

We listen to the radio, just me and boss in office.

I'd hate that. I can't work in jobs that aren't busy it's mind numbingly boring. A clothes shop was the worst. It makes me despressed I have to be busy

Polarbearflavour · 22/01/2018 10:12

Does your boss not know that you are bored?

Rattymare · 22/01/2018 10:16

I have a really boring job but it's not the worst job I've ever had - I listen to radio 5 (plenty of good topics to listen to) - or watch TV on my phone.
I taught myself to crochet too - It passes the time.

theForeigner · 22/01/2018 10:22

Have you spoken to your boss?

Do you have skills which you could use in this company / office?

ToEarlyForDecorations · 22/01/2018 10:25

Could you not have fun counting the weeks/months until your maternity leave starts ?

I've had jobs so boring that I've found going to the toilet interesting because it breaks the monotony.

How many Mondays until you go on maternity leave ? How many journeys to and from work ? Add up the miles you will travel in total. The distance from home to Glasgow ? Oh just drive to Glasgow and have done with it. (You see I've been bored before, don't you ?)

How many work lunches ? How many sandwiches until your mat leave starts ?

A cup of tea on arrival means you will be going to the toilet around an hour and half later. Or sooner as you are pregnant. How much scanning will you have done in between times ? Can you beat the radio host on the radio to their predictable catchphrase or can you tell when the traffic bulletin or particular advert is late ? (Daily long boring drives to work taught me how to do this.)

Hatemyjob2018 · 22/01/2018 10:35

@ToEarlyForDecorations
You sound like you've been exactly where I am now! Toilet breaks are my saviour- breaks up the hours- though I find myself going more than I need to!

@Polarbearflavour
love the name! Nope, if I finish my scanning I get to fold gloves (woooo) or something equally as thrilling. So I drag it out as long as possible.

How long have you been there?

I’ve had members of staff who have found the 'basic' stuff not challenging enough and then dragged it out. But why would I give them more challenging work if to my mind they take so long to do the easy stuff?

Hatemyjob2018 · 22/01/2018 14:12

Nearly a year.
If I finish the basic scanning stuff it's just repackaging gloves ect :/

Do you get on with the boss?

Hatemyjob2018 · 22/01/2018 14:32

Mostly, yes

A lot of jobs are boring and monotonous. Look at the positives:

  1. you can go on mumsnet to pass the time, you said so yourself. Try working in a factory, stood up for 8 hours doing the same fucking thing

  2. you will be on maternity leave soon so there is an end in sight.

  3. Worse jobs I have had off the top of my head: courgette picking, banana sorting (got foot rot) , trying to sell shutters (didn't) door to door sales. Most of which I did backpacking. When I got a boring office job I was over the moon.

Hang in there.

dlnex · 22/01/2018 14:42

well that's a plus, you could have a really great job but an awful boss. How long till mat leave?

EggsonHeads · 22/01/2018 14:42

You should take maternity leave as an opportunity to retrain so that you can find a job that is a bit more challenging.

Camomila · 22/01/2018 14:46

I'd love that job if it was part time (I just want a little part time job and I'm studying so don't want to have to do extra thinking).

I used to have a filing job I loved, I'd file and daydream/plan holidays in my head/plan recipes/make up stories.

StillTryingHard · 22/01/2018 14:46

Download a focus app that splits your day into 25m chunks separated by 5m breaks. Write down a list of your 5 top goals - doing job being one. Then rotate each 25m slot focusing on one goal. E.g. - 25m on boring work jobs all in one go, 5m cup of tea, 25m on prep for baby Inc MN threads, 5m cup of tea, 25m language you want to learn (headphones are your gift) etc etc.

BlackberryandNettle · 22/01/2018 21:30

How much mat pay will you be giving up if you leave? If you only get statutory, I think if you changed jobs you'd lose out on that but still be entitled to maternity allowance. There's not much difference so may be worth changingnow. On the other hand, staying in a boring job can pay off if you're very tired twds the end as it's an easy day to et through. Or if they'll give major flexibility with hours when you return, that can be worth a lot too.

ElderflowerWaterIsDelish · 23/01/2018 06:38

I know it doesn't really help with the boring day at work...but can you arrange a treat for yourself, so that you have the excitement of looking forward to the treat to get you through the boring day...it doesn't have to be anything expensive, it could be a favourite takeaway, or watching a film you are looking forward to on tv, or looking forward to reading a few magazine, etc for daily treats...or something like a new top,/manicure/blow dry etc for weekly treat...

If you had something to look forward to you could use that to focus on instead of the boring day,

It's just an idea, but it might make.it more bearable.Smile
