Sorry posting for traffic very worried!!

DS aged 12 months has been on and off antibiotics for recurring ear infections since Just after Xmas. His ears aren't clearing up but seeing docs next week for that so fine.

Basically (trying to be tactful here so please forgive me) his penis and testicles and surrounding areas are really red and rashy and he keeps clawing at the area and making it bleed. Can't really tell if it's swollen or not - but it's hot to the touch when I've tried to put cream on it (as I thought it was just awful nappy rash) no change in wipes nappies anything like that.

Could it be some sort of reaction to antibiotics at all? Any ideas what it could be and if he needs to be seen by dr at all?

Not the same but I get horrendous thrush on anti biotics maybe it could be some sort of male similar reaction? I'd get onto 111 to be safe.

ANother27 · 21/01/2018 21:39

I'm just worried as it doesn't seem to be improving and just getting worse and I don't like that fact that he's a normal temp but his bits are hot to touch!

Have a google of thrush nappy rash. You can use regular over the counter on it if that's what it is.

sourpatchkid · 21/01/2018 21:53

Poor Boy, I think thrush is a side effect? Jus bumping for you really - id see a Doctor to be sure

Definitely sounds like it could be thrush, DS had it as a baby and no creams helped until Dr prescribed canesten HC, cleared it up really quickly. Not sure if you can get it just from a pharmacy or if you need a prescription, but worth trying.

44PumpLane · 21/01/2018 22:03

Yep, yeast infection was my immediate thought.
When you take antibiotics it kills all the good bacteria in your body as well as the bad (so it would also be a good idea to feed your son live yogurt to help replenish his intestinal bacteria)- and one of the side effects can be thrush.

My 13 month old is on antibiotics at the minute and I'm filling her with live yogurt and keeping an eye on her to make sure I notice straight away if she displays any symptoms of thrush.

ANother27 · 21/01/2018 22:03

From the pics it looks like that might be what it is. Is thrush usually itchy? Not had it myself before. He's got Doctors Tuesday anyway for jabs (another thread on not knowing if he can have them done on AB's lol) so will try and sort it then!!

Yes it can be hideously itchy!

Mishappening · 21/01/2018 22:20

Show it to the doc - get the treatment going as soon as possible

HeavenKnowsImMiserableCow · 21/01/2018 23:06

Don’t leave it till Tuesday thrush is insanely itchy and sore and only gets worse so I’d go the pharmacy first thing if they can’t help Id phone the docs ASAP to get seen. Poor thing it’s very uncomfortable.

FruitCider · 22/01/2018 08:02

Hi OP, does sound like thrush.

Most ear infections are viral - have they actually swabbed any ear discharge to make sure it is a) bacterial and b) check antibiotic sensitivity?

Talkingfrog · 22/01/2018 13:17

You may have sorted it now, but most doctors surgeries will give advice calls. You could check about the vaccination at the same time.

ANother27 · 22/01/2018 19:01

Thanks both for replies today. They did actually take a swab and sent it but nothing back yet. Also got the answer to my vaccine question too lol. Have got him some cream for nappy area so hoping it'll work soon!
