To think DH works too much?

His stated hours are 8:30-5, M-F, an hour break for lunch. On salary.

He actually starts before 8am, rarely leaves before 5:30. Often takes a short lunch.

Also works from home most evenings, for 1-3 hours. Sometimes he runs jobs overnight (software development). No extra pay for the homeworking, but he does get performance bonuses. Nice to have the extra money but we don't actually "need" it, and...

He's often very tired, stressed and grumpy. I feel like his work time is taking away from family time.

Or is this just normal working hours nowadays?

I don't know about other industries but I don't think that it's unusual in IT. I often work a few hours over the weekend and evenings and I'm only part-time. I think you should let him know that you aren't happy though - there may be a way of changing things, and it may be that he's just drifted into this way of working without needing to

my DH has his own business, leaves between 07.00 and 07.30 most days , works until 9 pm 2 or 3 nights a week, and often has to work on his days off!

know someone else in IT and TBHm sounds like your DH has a fairly reasonable day !

16 hours days, all nighters and no breaks seem to be the norm in IT

in fact, in many jobs now

9 - 5 does not seem to exist

My DH works over 300 miles away from home, lives in one room digs, leaves for work each morning at 5.30am and gets in around 7pm.
He does this from a Monday until the following weeks Friday when he travels over 300 miles to come home for the weekend.

Once a month his firm pay his train ticket the other weekend he pays his for his own.

So in all he works 12 days straight to get 2-3 days off.

I love that man

Normal I'm afraid.

Not unusual in IT unfortunately.

Dh works for a small company and does fairly long hours and often works evenings and weekends in busy periods, BUT (and this is a big but) being a small company they are FAB about being flexible with extra days off here and there, and he always leaves mega early on a Wednesday so he can come with us for ds1's swimming lesson and goes in late on a Thursday to take ds1 to school.

So don't really object to the long hours really as a fair amount of the extra hours is done from home and they are good at being flexible for other stuff too - a bit of give and take. Plus dh really loves his job and cares a lot about the company.

i am a restaurant widow. He worked 82 hours last week

read it and weep

Pollyanna · 27/04/2007 18:46

I presume he is well paid for it.

I think those hours aren't at all unusual

My dh is out of the house for longer hours than that and is never without his blackberry (even on holiday) .He is never home to see the children in the evenings and most days leaves at 8. He doesn't usually take lunch. No performance bonus for extra hours.

In fact, I am out of the house 7.30-7 on my days in the office and don't take lunch, also have to work from home (without performance bonuses).
