to think this is how future wars will start?

I have just been reading on Twitter that with current consumption Cape Town is set to run dry of water on 21/04.
Residents are currently limited to 87L each but more than 60% are using more that the restricted amount so as of 01/02 the new limit will be 50l.

Does anyone else think this will be the kind of stuff the new wars are fought over? Literally battles to exist because of a lack of water. Sanitation we be out the window, the stench will be horrendous, riots will take over and people will die of disease and dehydration.

How have we fucked this planet is so badly?

South Africa knows that the way to stop this is by building desalination plants, and has known for a long time. Yet the first plant in Cape town is only being built weeks before the dam runs dry. Anyone who thinks ZA is somehow a more civilized country than other African countries is wrong; the government is corrupt to the bone.

were there long, protracted arguments about (a) who should pay to build it and (b) who should pay (and how much) for the water from it ?

Maybe we need "smart" water meters ? After all they (somehow) magically reduce energy consumption. I mean the only way we can save water - like electricity - is to install a meter which let's us know exactly how much water we are using. Or, maybe "smart" meters don't save a bean ?

This goes into it quite well. It was 100 percent the government’s fault.

It was 100 percent the government’s fault.

Ultimately (natural disasters aside, and even then the response is ...) everything is. After all, we give these clowns powers, privilege and cash specifically to sort this shit out. Who else could there be to blame ?

Friedgreen · 26/01/2018 11:18

It really frustrates me. I have family in South Africa, friends, and they have to do everything themselves from arranging their own security, education, to now obtaining their own water. The government is a shit show.

DGRossetti · 26/01/2018 11:20

The government is a shit show.

Get rid off, get another. Isn't that the democratic mantra ?

Friedgreen · 26/01/2018 11:28

The next government will be similar. Nothing new under the African sun :(

SA is run by a bunch of greedy crooks who would rather see money in their own back pockets than spend it on infrastructure. Water and power facilities have just not had enough spent on them to keep them maintained (nor have they been run by sufficiently qualified people). There are daily brownouts even in the expensive areas of the country, let alone the sodding shanty towns.

I have family over there who rely on borehole water, yet without electricity for three days meant they had no running water. This is in the posh suburbs of joburg, and it is a regular occurrence. I'm not sure how there will be enough electricity to run desalinisation plants once they are eventually built...

And the UK isn't ?

ohfortuna · 26/01/2018 11:47

The Greedy Crooks will soon have denuded the country which they seek to exploit.... That doesn't leave them in a very good position

ohfortuna · 26/01/2018 11:48

No doubt there is also a good amount of corruption in the UK but it doesn't benefit those at the top to be so corrupt that the society's infrastructure collapses

ohfortuna · 26/01/2018 11:51

In order to have a modern comfortable lifestyle the people at the top need a population who are educated with access to medicine, with stable institutions and the rule of law so that they can innovate and progress

*Waters a bit of a nuisance, and tends to be in all the wrong places.

I vaguely recall Loch Ness holds more freshwater than all the other lakes in the UK combined. Shame it's not inside the M25.*

Well it's not the wrong place for the people who live near it ... what astounding arrogance Hmm

I’m sure corruption in the UK government exists, but in South Africa it’s absolutely endemic.

Don't get you DG ???

I'm so glad I found this thread, it has been very interesing. Makes me think about what I should do with the water from our dehumidifier, I empty it every 2 days and just pour it away Blush

I’m thinking maybe the pp who wrote this meant that the ratio of population to water is incredibly low near Loch Ness and given the density of population within the M25, it’s a shame we don’t have such a fabulous resource here. Obviously, there aren’t the jobs around Loch Ness to attract a huge population. Grin

It was .... a joke.
