It's a fabulous place. Totally unique and beautiful.

Don't have coffee in St Marks Square. Too expensive.

Do take your most comfortable shoes to walk in.

HairyToity · 21/01/2018 19:38

Loved it. We stayed in a teeny tiny apartment in what would have been the Jewish area. We just wondered around and got boats to places. It's a decade ago now. We did have G and Ts one evening at St Marks Square. It was worth it. The orchestra played and ambience was lovely. We got cheap flights with Ryanair to make up for it.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 21/01/2018 19:41

It underwhelms me. It is totally rammed with tourists even off season. I expected to be stunned by it but felt jostled and shoved and very ripped off. It can be done in a day (from Verona for example which is much nicer)

BlondeB83 · 21/01/2018 19:42

It’s amazing! But avoid the tourist spots after an hour or two!

This is a fabulous hidden gem of a hotel:

There is an amazing restaurant just around the corner also in a very quiet square. Perfect and off the beaten track yet close to everything. We had the garden room with a lovely private courtyard. Amazing.

MelanieCheeks · 21/01/2018 19:44

Who's going and how long for?

Belindarocks · 21/01/2018 19:45

There is a nice little restaurant just as you cross over the Rialto Bridge. It's called Rialto Tratorria. It's not a rip off like most of the eating places in the centre.

notmaryberry · 21/01/2018 19:48

I thought it was so utterly unique, like nowhere else on earth and very beautiful, especially if you love architecture and art (I don't). It was, however, a bit quiet for us in terms of atmospheric restaurants / bars. I would go again but maybe do a bit more research first for places to go.

FucksBizz · 21/01/2018 19:52

DH and I went in December. It was beautiful, it far exceeded expectations and it was gloriously quiet. I've been before in April and it was PACKED, unbearable really, it's definitely a place to go off season.
Go on the AC/TC or Vaporetti to murano and burano, they're beautiful islands. And try to be on the boat at sunset, oh my lord that was amazing (reminisces happily)
Go for cocktails at Osteria Al'Alba and visit the Liberia Acqua Alta (flooded bookshop).

We went last June, was so lovely

We stayed on Giudecca and it was really nice. Lots of lovely restaurants along the quay and you could sit right next to the water. Also the opera house is beautiful if you fancied a different sort of tour.

TooManyPaws · 21/01/2018 19:56

Beautiful, I'd love to go again and spend more than a week there. Walk, walk, walk; that way you'll get to explore the non-touristy bits. Avoid the high season as the tourist areas are claustrophobic. Murano was amazing to see the glass but too pricy to buy any! We would shop in the market and virtually picnic on fantastic food the whole time. Vaporettos are a brilliant way of getting around to see everything, particularly on the Grand Canal. Sadly didn't make it to the Lido.

Madbengalmum · 21/01/2018 19:57

If people are underwhelmed by venice then they are visiting the wrong spots. Avoid the tourist traps and you will see some amazing things.

FucksBizz · 21/01/2018 19:57

Basically, you must go

You would need a good few days to explore, you cannot possibly see the good stuff in a day.

DevilTree · 21/01/2018 20:03

Go out of season.
Stay on the Lido.
Get off the main drag.
Get lost. Take your camera.
The Lido is worth a lot of your time, and much less of a 'living museum' feel than Venice itself.

DevilTree · 21/01/2018 20:03

Also, it's pretty spooky and atmospheric when it's flooded, especially when the flood sirens go off.

PetiteMarseillaise · 21/01/2018 20:09

Amazing place. We went in October which was busy but not unbearably so. Breathtakingly beautiful. I'd happily go again in the off season.

NeilPetark · 21/01/2018 20:12

Walk and explore. Don’t just go to the tourist spots.

windchimesabotage · 21/01/2018 20:13

Love Venice. Been 16 times throughout my life and never ran out of things to do. Went most recently with my toddler to the Biennale art festival and it was utterly amazing.
Honestly think its the most beautiful place in the world.

My tips about it are:
NEVER go in july or August. Best times are late may or september. It gets ridiculously hot and crowded in mid summer and is just not worth the hassle. Im talking body to body levels of crowded.

Buy a boat pass for the 'buses' which are actually boats, which covers the whole length of your stay. They look complicated but you will easily get used to how they work and they are the easiest and cheapest way to get about. They are much much easier than walking as remember you cant just cross the road on the main island, you would need to walk till you reached a bridge and it can become very complicated and very easy to get lost. A journey which looks like it would take a few mins on the map can end up taking an hour. So if you want to go somehwere specific its best to get on the boat bus/Vaparetto. Buy the pass because you really get stung when you buy individual tickets from stop to stop. Walking can be lovely but as i said its not ideal if you want to be somewhere at a certain time.

Dont eat in San Marco square or on any of the side streets leading off it unless you are prepared to pay a fortune. If you sit down at one of the cafes in the square they will charge you a flat rate for even sitting there on top of what you pay for actual food and drink. The flat rate when i went last year was 10 euros. It is worth it if you can afford that, especially at night when the bands play, theres nothing quite like it but do be prepared for it to be ridiculously expensive.

The menus on the main island are usually changed over past 6pm to become twice the price so if you are on a budget stick to lunch out.

Also if you are on a budget or have children the best place to stay is on the Venice Lido. That is an island opposite the main island and only ten mins away max by boat. (covered by the boat pass) It also has a lovely beach good for kids. The food on the Lido is also much much cheaper and theres a big supermarket.

Public toilets is a good one to mention. They all cost money so keep change on you and its a good idea to find out where they are on a map before you set out as you dont want to have to pay loads of money to go to a cafe just to use the loo.

Do get a map. Its not intuitive even though its a smallish place, you will get lost if you just randomly wander and the street signs are notoriously bad.

If you have some money to burn go for a drink or even a meal if you are feeling flush, on the roof terrace or the Danieli Hotel. Amazing view!!! Very expensive tho.

The bridge of sighs is a must see but easy to miss. Its next to the Doges palace and you can see it from the bridge opposite. You can go over it if you pay to go in the Doges palace. The Doges palace is very beautiful and worth a trip if you have time.

The Guggenheim art museum is also a must see if you like art. Thats off the beaten track a bit. Even if you dont like art that much its a lovely building to go in and chill out in the small garden and cafe.

Arsenale is a wonderful area to wander round. Its the old military barricades. The cafes are a bit cheaper round there too.

If you have time its really worth visiting some of the smaller islands (they will be covered by your boat pass but do take a while to reach) In my opinion the best are Murano which is the lace island. All the houses have colours which was originally instead of numbers and its so beautiful. Torchello which is the oldest island and was originally where people had settled but the was ravaged by the plague. It has a very calm atmosphere and the oldest bridge over the canal. Called the devils bridge! Also has two churches which are interesting because one is in a western style and one in an eastern style and they are next to each other. Wonderful and cheap cafe there too with amazing pizza, play equipment for kids and very friendly goats!!! Cimetero which is an island that is a cemetary which doesnt sound very nice but its incredibly beautiful.

I personally dont like Murano the glass blowing island as its stupidly expensive for no reason and theres not actually much to see. You can see glass blowing around the rest of Venice as well. But i guess if you have time its one of the 'places to go'

coastalchick · 21/01/2018 20:16

Hated it. Full of tourists (even in September) crap food.

But then my best mate loved it. So I don't know really.

Not for me, but if you do go - fabulous restaurant called La Zucca (you'll need to book).

Homemadeapplepie · 21/01/2018 20:19

We stayed in one of the Residence Ca' degli Antichi Giardini apartments. They are in Cannaregio which is a residential not tourist area. Plenty of non-touristy bars and restaurants within easy walk. Beautiful apartments. I’d definitely stay there again.

TheSconeOfStone · 21/01/2018 20:19

We went in November about 12 years ago and it was absolutely stunning. Cold and sunny. We wandered along with mulled wine from a street market at sunset. Just perfect. We only had two days so didn’t see many sights. Just wandered for miles.

Awks · 21/01/2018 20:20

We did a few European cities by train for our silver wedding, and the best bit if the whole trip was coming out of the railway station and seeing Venice unfold in front of us. It was the most beautiful place I have ever seen in my life and I loved every single minute.

We just wandered, it was so peaceful and beautiful. I'm jealous, have a great time

SaltySeaBird · 21/01/2018 20:21

See I hate Venice. I’ve been three times.

I’m well travelled (I’ve been to around 80 countries and 100s of destinations within these), I’m fortunate to have worked in travel for years. I would probably put Venice as my least favourite place in the world.

In summer it’s unbearably crowded and the whole places feels like a tourists theme park. It feels false and hideous. In winter it’s more tolerable but for me still feels like a theme park. It’s very overpriced too although last time we stayed out of the city centre and got decent enough food and drink cheaply.

I’d rather go elsewhere in Italy.

BarrysnotLyons · 21/01/2018 20:27

Been twice. First time in August while interrailing. Very busy and warm but still enjoyed.
Went in February second time round when the carnival was on. Accommodation was expensive but what an experience. So much colour and drama! And as a plus the tourist attractions were actually really quiet. Would highly recommend.
