I have always loved drinking more than eating . In that I love a cup of tea and I also enjoy wine .
Over the last three years have got into the habit of having a glass of wine whilst cooking tea . Then have another mid eve . At most I wd have half a bottle ever . Unless at a party or similar . I really enjoy the treat aspect . We were on holiday yesterday and we had three glasses of wine during the course of an afternoon in a pub looking over the sea .
Today I decided not to have a drink . I realised it's become a habit similar to eating meals or something like that .
I miss it but I don't feel uncomfortable but it's like am ' expecting ' a drink in my body - suggesting a level of dependence ?
Aibu or a health risk to have developed this habit ?

My issue is I enjoy wine more than any other ritual !
I don't like hot choc , herbal tea or soft drinks .
I like Diet Coke tho with lots and lots of ice but that is bad for you too !!!!
Maybe I could dilute the wine ! But I do agree that a rest for the liver would be good - such a Shame wine has Alcohol in !

Drink non alcoholic wine?

If you notice that you're not drinking, then you are on your way to dependent drinking. Getting into the habit of not drinking every day whilst you miss it but don't really find it a problem to go without sounds exactly right,

Could you hold it to 2-3 glasses a day at weekends, maybe one weekday nigh, and special occasions?

My drinking creeps up sometimes, and I used the Drinkaware app for a while which did help me really see what I was doing.

I think 2 glasses in one day is fine but try to have 2 alcohol free days in the week.

Hmm Diet Coke made with stevia not the chemical sweeteners? I hear you, nothing hits the spot like a nice glass of red for me either but...there has to be something - take up some crazy exercise those nights?

i'd be uncomfortable if i had a (drinking) habit that was that ingrained also

Delatron · 21/01/2018 20:53

I don't think you need to do anything drastic. Just a couple of days off a week. You clearly have an 'off switch' and can only have a couple.
I tend not to drink Sun/Mon/Tues and then look forward to a couple of glasses on a Wednesday. It's just about resetting habits.

I wouldn't like to feel like I depended on something and couldn't manage without it, so I'd definitely have a day a week off from wine if I were you. It's that expectation, I'm afraid of and would resent that.

This article is interesting and shows what I mean - drinking within limits versus way you're doing = 2% extra chance of breast cancer. Up to you to decide whether that's too big a risk
