Well could I? Never seen it, never fancied it, until now! Could I just start watching it tonight do you think without having and prior idea what's gone on? Or would I be totally confused?!

Oh it's absolutely wonderful, you will love it.
Yes defo watch tonight, then you will want to watch back episodes, it's a lovely program.

Beeziekn33ze · 21/01/2018 17:12

jimijack I agree!

Smarmydrippings · 21/01/2018 17:13

You'll be fine. You probably will get sucked in and binge watch psst episodes though.
One of my favourite programmes.

ShinyMe · 21/01/2018 17:13

Absolutely you can. I don't watch it, apart from watching the Christmas specials because I'm at my parents' and it makes perfect sense despite never having seen it in between.

I find it incredibly twee and predictable personally, but maybe that's just the Christmas specials.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 21/01/2018 17:13

No the episodes are self contained with just the personal lives of the midwives running in the background, they aren’t complicated though and agree it’s a wonderfully sweet programme.

Kidssendingmenuts · 21/01/2018 17:14

You'll love it, but also if you can download the other series, it's highly addictive and you'll love it! X

Wait4nothing · 21/01/2018 17:15

You’ll be fine - each episode is stand alone and about the patients (usually) and the midwifes have ongoing stories through the series. Another who thinks you’ll get sucked in and want to watch them all

SparklySeaShell · 21/01/2018 17:22

Fabulous, I'm in! Grin

I am watching for the firsttime tonight too.

Librarybooksandacoconut · 21/01/2018 17:38

Series 1-5 are on Netflix if you want to catch up after tonight's episode

Aftereights91 · 21/01/2018 18:28

Omg is it on tonight? Love that show

ForalltheSaints · 21/01/2018 18:56

I will not be watching. I will not phone my mum whilst it is on as it is a must for her, as she worked in a hospital in the fifties and sixties elsewhere in London. I think that it has probably run its course now it is in the sixties and is possibly later than the period covered by the books.

Probably still better drama than some of the 'feel good' Sunday night dramas such as Heartbeat were.

SparklySeaShell · 21/01/2018 20:00

Ok, I'm ready!!

I wish they would lose the Vanessa Redgrave voice over at the beginning. supposed to be the older voice of one of the original characters who isn't in it any more so a bit pointless really.

ToadOfSadness · 21/01/2018 20:10

I started watching it late, have now bought all the old ones and watched them as although there are some available on catch up the ones filmed at St. Josephs School are the first ones and not currently available and those are the ones I had missed. (Before the bomb and move which was actually when the school closed and was developed into luxury flats.)

One episode and you will want to see them all.

I also wish they didn't have Vanessa Redgrave at the beginning, the advantage with buying the DVD is that you can skip it.

SparklySeaShell · 21/01/2018 20:38

Oh I love it!!!

viques · 21/01/2018 21:01

So Sparkly, what did you think?

any questions or gaps to be filled in?

tapdancingmum · 21/01/2018 21:04

It always brings a tear to my eye. They sometimes shown reruns on Drama.

OverinaFlash · 21/01/2018 21:07

Series 1 to 5 are available on Netflix!

Smarmydrippings · 21/01/2018 21:07

What a fantastic episode to start with. Glad you love it Sparkly.
It ran true to me. I know two women who came to the UK as nurses in the 60s.
My late partner was Jewish.
I cried a lot but it always feels so warm and reassuring for me.

SparklySeaShell · 21/01/2018 21:08

Oh it was beautiful!! A few questions...

  • Are some of them nuns and some not?
  • Are they general nurses as well as midwives?
  • What was the thing about questioning the older ladies state of mind?
  • Is the lady with the perfume (who was such a nice midwife to the lady with the breech birth) an alcoholic
  • So it's set in the east end of London?
  • Just an observation that I loved the new midwife!

Read the book.
The first series is based on it and the book is just incredible.
Enjoyed the first couple of series (particularly when I knew it was based on her real
Memoirs) but don't generally watch/enjoy it so much now.

Katescurios · 21/01/2018 21:14

I love it, if you want to catch up they are on Netflix but to answer your questions

  • they live in nonnatus house which is run by nuns and deliver midwifery and district nursing care
  • The older lady sister Monica Joan, was a midwife nun but in her old age is battling dementia
  • trixie tye nurse with the door perfume is an alcoholic yes
  • all set in the east end Poplar
  • new nurse does seem brill, I live nurse crane now too though she took some getting used to (the nurse who st with the dying lady)
Katescurios · 21/01/2018 21:18

So many typos, sorry! Hopefully you can understand it.

I think I could watch this show over and over again forever. It makes me laugh, cry, feel comforted and educates. I feel for the characters and they do such an amazing job in every episode.

Be warned though the seasons are short and there is ways too much time waiting for the next years Xmas special.

SparklySeaShell · 21/01/2018 21:19

That's so helpful Kate, thank you! I really adored it!
