To believe “wind the bobbin up” is inappropriate and to ask my child’s Nursery not to sing it.

Wind the bobbin up originated in the cotton mill towns of the north of England in Victorian times. As anyone who knows a bit about a bit history can tell you, the cotton mills were horrendous places which horrifically exploited women and children, forcing them to do dangerous work in appalling conditions for little pay.

How can it be right to trivialise these horrors by getting children to sing a light-hearted ditty about it... It’s offensive to the memory of all those who suffered these horrendous conditions and experienced serious injury or even death as a result of hideously exploitative working practices.

You stated quite early on that this was a TAAT. MNHQ don't seem to mind. 😆

You stated quite early on that this was a TAAT

I later clarified... this is a thread inspired by a thread, a TIBAT, not specifically a TAAT....

Clearly a TIBAT is ok?!?

Obviously! 😂

“because people want an easy tool to use against the ‘professionally offended’ zealots who want to place unreasonable restrictions on what is and isn’t acceptable to say”

If there really are “professionally offended zealots” putting unreasonable restrictions on speech, why not just use one of the countless real examples that must surely exist, rather than making things up? If, on the other hand, those “professionally offended zealots” simply want people to stop being racist, sexist, homophobic or disablist, then it might be necessary to invent things to fuel the outrage of the professionally unoffended.......

I believe we need to be mindful and sensitive of others in our interactions with them. I think there are a few though who revel in finding offence when the person clearly doesn’t even unconsciously (let alone consciously) have the prejudices that underpin the apparent offence. This behaviour is counter-productive and more an attempt to exert power by delineating what is acceptable and unacceptable...

.... Also, my post was ‘hyperbole’, using an exaggeration to make a point, a well known rhetorical device. I don’t see why I can’t use it, or is this another attempt to turn our communcation into bland, dry prose and mechanical fact spouting.

I have been amused to see that many of the angrier posters (who didn't read the thread and/or didn't suspect this might not be serious) were posters I recognised as pro-brexit.

Just a coincidence I'm sure. Grin

bedknob - If it came from the northern mills how did it spread suddenly in recent years?

Just how recent are your recent years? i went to school in the early 70s and 'wind the bobbin' up was my favourite song.

user1482573375 · 22/01/2018 22:11

They exploited men too, you know. You've got to be a troll.

MsHopey · 23/01/2018 09:12

The sun have posted this on their Facebook page without quoting any of the OPs follow up comments Angry

BertrandRussell · 23/01/2018 09:15

Oh well done, OP. Another victory over political correctness gone mad. We have to stand up to these do-gooding liberals, you just can't say anything these days....

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 23/01/2018 10:05

I've just posted a comment on there.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 23/01/2018 11:12

and you think someone will read that?

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 23/01/2018 11:52

I would, if the notification flashed up on my phone. But then I'm nosey.

derxa · 23/01/2018 12:11

Great thread especially the 'outraged' comments.

blueskyinmarch · 23/01/2018 12:20

Don't be silly. All old nursery rhymes and fairy tales have a dark underlying story. Wind the bobbin up, wind the bobbin up ....Nope not finding it offensive.

Motoko · 23/01/2018 12:26

Yeah, and SO MANY people jump right in with their irrelevant comments, after only reading the first post.

blueskyinmarch · 23/01/2018 12:36

Seems like I didn't RTFT! Grin

Helmetbymidnight · 23/01/2018 13:09

This time next year, all the crazed Daily-Mail morons will be using this very story alongside the 'No one's allowed to mention Christmas anymore' as another 'PC gawn mad' thing.

Oh joy.

snowflakesneedalife · 23/01/2018 15:34

Oh dear me. You really do need to get a life.
