Tell me about any occupational health horror stories!

Why?

TinaMena · 20/01/2018 01:02

You start some odd threads Tina...

Horror stories? Hmm

I work in HR and it takes so much effort to convince people that OH are there to do 3 things:

  1. Support and help the employee
  2. Support and help the manager, who, most of the time hasn’t got a clue how to help the employee (as per point 1)
  3. Agree a rehabilitation and/ return to work plan

I hate it when people ‘diss’ OH. My experiences are only positive and they have, on occasions saved someone’s life, spotted a terminal illness before a GP and provided valuable support to many of my colleagues suffering depression, low mood and anxiety.

Of course there will be individuals within the OH profession who are not as good as other, but a thread like this completely undermines what they’re there to do.

What Appraiser said.

I got sent to occy health... got a morning off work the guy was lovely found no issue with me and I had a lovely coffee on the way back to work. Hmm

Tipsntoes · 20/01/2018 12:10

IME, occupational health, does what it says, looks after the health of the employee and helps the employer to support that.

TheUglyFive · 20/01/2018 12:11

I've been sent, dreading it. Will tell you if it's a horror story after Tuesday.

I've had "too many" absences.

Appraiser · 20/01/2018 15:01

Nothing to dread, it should be supportive, that’s its’ purpose

SauvignonBlanche · 20/01/2018 15:06

I've got a real shocking story for you...

They were really helpful when I was off for over 6 months with a brain tumour, they supported my return to work and helped to persuade my boss to stop wrapping me in cotton wool.

and here's another...

They provide me with sensible reports and helpful advice on the colleagues I refer to them.

Appraiser · 20/01/2018 16:32

And most people’s stories will be like @SauvignonBlanche

Sorry you went through that Sauvignon, hope all is well now and work / your boss is doing what they should!

SauvignonBlanche · 20/01/2018 16:39

It was a few years ago now @Appraiser, I whinged off- loaded about it on here at the time, all is well thanks.

OH were great, it was an interesting experience being on the 'other side' though.

ilovesooty · 20/01/2018 16:41

OH have been really helpful when I've been involved with them.

How disappointing for the OP

PinkyBlunder · 20/01/2018 16:52

I’ve seen OH a few times throughout my pregnancy and they’ve been really supportive.

Sharpandshineyteeth · 20/01/2018 18:00

I've got one!!

I went last week as I am currently undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer.

One of the gems she threw in was " it's all well and good wanting to do social work, but you may find this changes things for you and your priorities change and you want to spend more time at home with your children"

I was Shock , but silly me didn't say anything.
