Teachers comment about 'concentration camp' (secondary school)

A teacher at my child's school, known for their passive aggressive attitude (and boring lessons-relevant) made a comment to the class and said " you're not in a concentration camp" aibu to think this is inappropriate?

Apparently the class were unenthusiastic and unresponsive (and probably bored) to the way the lesson was being delivered so the teacher tried to, well not quite sure what they were trying to get the class to do by saying what they did as all they got back were confused looks and whispers.

My child wasn't the only one to say, after the class had dispersed, they felt it an inappropriate comment.

Ironically the class have been studying the Holocaust in a different subject class so are well aware of what a concentration camp was, hence the startled looks from some of the children and hushed comments.

Should something be said to the school or view it as a faux pas by a teacher who really should engage their brain before they open their mouth?

What a non issue. HmmClearly this teacher feels the kids are spoilt, and wants to remind them they are lucky to be living charmed lives.

And I say this as a Jew.

Nitrobetty1 · 19/01/2018 23:38

Chill out. Not a great thing to say by the teacher. But you try secondary teaching & see what it’s like.

pinkdelight · 19/01/2018 23:38

I think you're being over sensitive. People say all kinds of things. This is not one to get worked up about.

LyraPotter · 19/01/2018 23:39

I really think it would be an overreaction to report this to the school. I agree it's not necessarily the best comparison the teacher could have used but if she's staring down a wall of ungrateful kids who don't want to pull their finger out and engage, I can see how it could slip out. Let it go and save your complaints for if something actually serious happens.

JacobsAngel · 19/01/2018 23:39

Actually you couldn't be more wrong.

What? Seriously?

No, don’t contact the school nothing happened.

NovemberWitch · 19/01/2018 23:41

It’s a tedious pita to have to teach bored, indifferent children with no interest in most things beyond Youtube, social media and reality tv.
I’m amazed they remembered anything.
Feel free to email, complain on Facebook or go to the press/OFSTED. It’s your right, innit?

Ok... 🙄

Samcro · 19/01/2018 23:41

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 19/01/2018 23:44

YABU

DuckAndPancakes · 19/01/2018 23:45

Well
At least they didn’t tell them they needed to be in a concentration camp. Because they weren’t concentrating. On the subject at hand.
“You’re not in a concentration camp... this is an unconcentration camp...”

^ happened at my school. I don’t think it needs complaining about.
Maybe he said you need to concentrate class, and no bugger was actually listening and they misheard?

JacobsAngel · 19/01/2018 23:45

I have worked in schools so I know exactly how children can be, also know how some teachers can be too, I didn't say I was about to complain, just interested what others think.

You should definitely contact the school. Tell them that young Hermione has been triggered by the reference to a concentration camp and you will be looking for compensation, plus extra time at her GCSEs. See if you can get a full house on whiny mum bingo

coconuttella · 19/01/2018 23:46

I’m utterly tired of the tendency to be ‘offended’ over this kind of stuff. Complete and absurd over-reaction....

Fattymcfaterson · 19/01/2018 23:46

Startled looks and hushed comments.

This is possibly the most middle class secondary school I've ever heard of.

OverTheParapet · 19/01/2018 23:47

@DorisDangleberry 😂👏🏾

Justmuddlingalong · 19/01/2018 23:47

My toes are curling in mortification at the thought of being a teenager whose DM contacted the school about this.

TheSnowFairy · 19/01/2018 23:49

Op's AIBU: Should something be said to the school

Op at 23.45 I didn't say I was about to complain

Ah. So you were going to raise this in a positive way?

NovemberWitch · 19/01/2018 23:49

I do wish that we had cctv cameras broadcasting from classrooms. It would solve all sorts of problems. Including evidence of what actually happens in classrooms.

MoonfaceAndSilky · 19/01/2018 23:50

Non issue.

BackforGood · 19/01/2018 23:50

I wonder sometimes what people have - or more accurately don't have going on in their lives that they have time to recap everything each teacher says to each of their dcs, every day through out every lesson, so they can then unpick something that (I'll agree) might not have been a comment in an Outstanding lesson being delivered infront of Inspectors or job interviewers. Confused

I feel I'm achieving as a parent if I get more than "nothing" or "Why o you want to know?" when I ask any of my dc if they've had a good day or if anything interesting happened at school today.

coconuttella · 19/01/2018 23:51

Startled looks and hushed comments.

Well I guess they aren’t allowed pearls as part of their school uniform, so if they can’t clutch those, it’s not surprising they reverted to startled looks and hushed comments!

SilverySurfer · 19/01/2018 23:52

YABU and ridiculous.

clary · 19/01/2018 23:53

Backforgood lol @ "why do you want to know?" 😀

Me: so what did you do in school?

DD: stuff. y'know, lessons.

Me: Hmm
