Electric meter... wtf?!

One person living alone in a one bed flat.

Pre-payment card meter, no gas at the property.

Work 8-5 Mon-Fri so not even home all that much! No tumble dryer, no bath, no dish washer, nothing left on stand-by but do run two oil filled radiators for a couple of hours in the evening.

Meter check and no fault, no debt on it.

Currently putting £45 week (about £180 / mth) in the meter and E-On tell me this is considered an average / reasonable amount.

AIBU to think that’s bullshit?! Can’t keep up with how hungry the bloody meter is!!!

Time for water to heat is GCSE maths. Need to know power of heater, size of tank, initial and final water temperatures.

I could have written this post 10 years ago. Oddly enough my prepay meter was with E-on too and they tried to tell me it was normal.

I was turning off everything except the fridge for the 13 HOURS I wasn't there at all. And the 7-8hrs I was sleeping. Only turning on at wall as I used things. No tv at all. I had a small energy efficient fan heater to take the edge off my bedroom in morning and used hot water bottles and thermals pyjamas at nighttime. I was still spending £40-50 per week.

Eventually I snapped and had a normal meter installed. Difference was instant. My monthly bill was £35!! From the same sodding provider. I was so outraged I switched provider.

If you like where you're living and your landlord agrees, get the meter swapped.

It does sound rather excessive. I live alone,I have gas for central heating and hot water. I use my washing machine twice a week on average,I don't have a dishwasher, tumble dryer or power shower. I reckon on average that I put £15 a week on my prepay meter. I'm with Scottish Southern Electric.

I had an oil filled radiator upstairs to dry out a damp wall. It cost me £25 in the first week!! It's rarely on now.

Is this your first year with eon? They massively overcharged me in my first year based on their estimates. Got a nice refund at the end of the year at least...

Is is a lot less in summer? Or have you not been there long?

ButDoYouAvocado · 20/01/2018 21:08

I live in a 5 bed detached. My bill is £158pm. There's something not right with yours.

45 quid a WEEK on an electricity meter? No way! Admittedly, not read all the replies, but that can't be right. I had an electricity meter very late 90s, just me and it was no way that high!
Got to be wrong. Query at the very least.
