AIBU to ask for your after school snack ideas?

In a bit of a rut re after school snacks. Have 3 DC aged 8 and younger. I’d like to encourage healthier snacks, but also looking for inspiration and ideas for things we’ve not thought of.

Currently stock snacks are toasted scotch pancakes (with butter or honey), granola or oaty bars, biscuits, crackers with cheese, frubes, flapjacks, occasionally crisps. Only one is a keen fruit eater (the littlest). The others wouldn’t willingly snack on fruit but do eat fruit after meals.

What do you do in your house?

Over the years we've had...
Crumpets (with philly cheeseon top being a fave)
Sliced banana with a bit of peanut butter on top of each slice.
Bread sticks with quark to dip in.
Fruit salad (especially in the summer), fruit kebabs also went down well.
Carrot muffins.
Banana bread.

Choped red peppers and cucumber. In winter i try to have a pot of soup ready for when we get in also.

Ours is often fruit (apple, grapes, pear, an orange, raisins, etc.) and some sort of protein (nuts or cheese) and sometimes something more starchy as well (crackers, toast, etc.). Sometimes also a vegetable like carrot sticks or tomatoes or peppers or something. Mine is 5. I don't normally do things like granola bars or crisps as they're kind of expensive and mine would hoover through them and still be hungry.

Silicon muffin mold. Put a little something in the bottom of each (sardines, mackerel, cheese & ham, Cheese & tomato, anything you like) Bash a few eggs up and pour in. Oven 10 minutes. So quick and easy.

Nuts? Have you tried roasted chickpeas with paprika. They’re lovely and pretty healthy.
In summer I make ice lollies from yoghurt and fruit.
Cut bagels into little round discs, spray with garlic oil and bake.
Humous/cream cheese, salsa with breadsticks and veg

Fruit or nothing, honestly

MagicWillHappen · 19/01/2018 20:30

Fruit or salad (they'll both happily take a carrot from the fridge and eat it, skin and all, bugs bunny style)

Some mixed nuts

A piece of bread and butter

A piece of ham or cheese

Chocolate or crisps

Some great ideas, thanks so much!

Love the idea of roasted chickpeas, for me even if they don’t like them! I’ve also made ice lollies from fruit and yogurt in the past, will dig out those mounds.... one won’t eat eggs and one won’t eat any type of dip/sauce (to be fair he has SEN and it’s a texture thing...) but I’m happy to offer a combo of different things.

Will be great to mix things up a bit with new ideas and cut back on the bars etc. I do only buy own brand or when they are on offer usually, but it still adds up.

I also love making soup and like the idea of at least once a week whipping up a nice homemade one for them to have a cup of with a piece of bread/crumpet or whatever. Brilliant way to get more veg into them!

I try to give dd a dinner when she gets in as she's always starving.
If I don't get a chance to prepare it the night before I give her-

Toast /spaghetti hoops
Homemade soup/ roll
Yogurt/fruit/cheese/crackers
Cheese toasties
Peanut butter sandwich
Rice cakes with peanut butter

Marcine · 19/01/2018 20:54

Mine usually have peanut butter sandwiches or peanut butter on crumpets, fruit, tomatoes/cucumber, carrot sticks and hummus, cheese and crackers, yogurt.

littlecabbage · 19/01/2018 20:58

Crumpet
Fruit bread (toasted)
Malt loaf
Muffin (bread kind, not cake kind)
Houmous with carrot & cucumber sticks
Raisins, cashew nuts and cheese cubes
Crackers and cheese
Dry Shreddies
Natural yoghurt and fresh fruit
Fruit

Just fruit here. Then tea around 6pm. If fruit is all that's on offer they start eating it if they are hungry after school. We don't generally 'snack' but they are allowed fruit pretty much anytime.
