in thinking this course is open to everyone

Yawn, it's another trans thread but here goes....

I attend a large university. On our homepage there is currently a course being offered to "females, those who identify as women and non-binary". I am not that au-fait with all the new terminology but AFAIK non-binary pretty much incorporates anyone who is not sure/feels both male and female etc (don't wish to offend anyone, this was my understanding from googling the term).

I am not anti-trans and really don't care who attends the course BUT AIBU in thinking that actually with this wording anyone can attend the course so why not just have a course open to everyone? As men can identify as women and a man can be non-binary then just let everyone attend.

The course is very much themed towards "girls" learning a fairly mans dominated skill which is fair enough but I just find the wording really odd. Is it just me?

its aimed at women and in ensuring it is worded as inclusively as possible

But the wording means that any man can, technically, attend too. So a woman going thinking that she will only be with other women may be sorely mistaken. It is unlikely to be an issue but I just find it odd using all these fancy terms for who can attend when the reality is that they won't turn anyone away, man or woman!

Unfortunately it's now no longer allowed to have anything for just women, so they have to include the people who think personality = sex.

Is it a course that requires a vagina? Or something like coding? Because I can't see what your issue is. They aim a course at women so that women don't feel outnumbered learning a subject that's traditionally male-dominated. Technically it can be attended by men, in practice I doubt it's going to attract a bunch of men with this wording. It's nothing like saying it's open to everyone.

I don't have an issue with it and yes, it's coding. I just find the wording really odd. Either it's open to everyone or just women. I couldn't care less who I attend a course with. My AIBU is that the wording is ambiguous and therefore open to anyone. So it's not a women only course.

Women are now so low down in the pecking order that nothing is allowed to be aimed at us now.

britbat23 · 19/01/2018 16:20

Is the course aimed at the groups named, or restricted to them?

Cos it's a massive an important difference.
