Is it just me - Musicals?

Am I the only one who just doesn't "get" musicals? I like to go to the theatre for plays, I like to go to pop/music concerts. But I'd rather eat my own vomit than go to watch a musical. I have a few friends/family that love them and always pestering me to go, but I absolutely hate them.

I just don't "get" it when actors who suddenly burst into song or leap into dance every few minutes. The last I went to, that probably finished me off, was Cats - yes, I don't deny the fantastic scenery, costumes, etc., but it was really repetitive, no obvious story, just loads of people dressed up pretending to be cats. Once I'd seen the costumes/scenery, I was bored rigid.

Omg scampi I love that idea. Instead of Uncle Fucker from South Park it could be Cheeky Fucker! "Shut your fucking face cheeky fucker! You're a granny, selfish bastard cheeky fucker!"

MissionItsPossible · 19/01/2018 12:28

Granny?? Grabby! Grin

thelastjedi · 19/01/2018 12:28

Avenue Q, The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Little Shop of Horrors are fantastic!!

As is South Park which is totally a musical!!

socksandpants · 19/01/2018 12:29

I hated musicals (yet love opera and ballet so it's not the singing and dancing per se) until DC started doing them at school and LOVED them. I'm now a (part time) stage school mum and know them all backwards lol!

sonyaya · 19/01/2018 12:30

I love most musicals personally - Phantom, Les Mis move me to tears every time, more than even the excellent spoken plays like Curious Incident, and Book of Mormon has made me laugh more than anything.

It’s just an opinion though, no one is ignorant for disagreeing and not enjoying them!

starray · 19/01/2018 12:30

Moulin Rouge was great! I also have a real soft spot for Lerner and Loewe's Camelot.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 19/01/2018 12:30

I think it’s just personal taste, and I also think people have to remember not all musicals are the same.

I love them in general but I can’t stand Lloyd Webber musicals - I remember seeing Cats on VHS when I was a kid, and bloody hell was it boring.

Calamity Jane was my favourite musical as a kid, I would watch it over and over again. I think Howard Keel and Doris Day had such good chemistry, and the songs were fun! I don’t mind Oklahoma but I agree the long dancing scenes with no songs, especially the nightmare/ballet type one are bloody boring,

Has anyone seen the new ‘A Bronx Tale’ musical in New York, is it any good? Need to pick a musical for my upcoming trip, and I’m umming and ahhing .

crunchymint · 19/01/2018 12:31

There are musicals and musicals. Yes cats is bollocks, Took my mum to see it who loved it though. Cabaret though is the bees knees.

makeourfuture · 19/01/2018 12:31

It's the ridiculousness that makes it the highest form of human art.

Gatehouse77 · 19/01/2018 12:33

i love musicals but cannot abide ballet or opera. Except watching my own children do ballet.

metalmum15 · 19/01/2018 12:33

The only musical film I even half enjoyed was Rock of Ages, and that's only really down to the soundtrack.

Lol at the pp who said the South Park movie. Such a great film!

morningtoncrescent62 · 19/01/2018 12:34

And the current touring production is even bleaker than the (many) previous productions I've seen. I could barely function after the last scene.

I haven't seen it yet, but I saw one in London a few years ago with the most disturbing ending I'd ever seen - wonder if it was the same? I don't think I can/should describe it on a light-hearted thread.

Does anyone remember the classic EKL thread? EKL would make a superb Mary Poppins.

scampimom · 19/01/2018 12:34

Mission I think we've got an off-off-Broadway hit on our hands!

derxa · 19/01/2018 12:36

The Lion King moved me to tears- in a good way. Les Mis the opposite.
Carmen great, Don Giovanni mind numbing.

JustAnIdiot · 19/01/2018 12:36

YANBU

I hate musicals, but love plays & concerts.

I also hate opera, though love classical music & choral singing.

morningtoncrescent62 · 19/01/2018 12:38

scampimom, I think you may need to change your username to MaxBialystock Wink

"It's an invite, not a summons, you knooooooooow"

Downtheroadfirstonleft · 19/01/2018 12:44

If you keep away from the Loyd Webber ones, you’ll be OK. Saw Sunset Boulevard recently and it was the same song throughout and half of that was from Phantom....

BakedBeans47 · 19/01/2018 12:44

YANBU, it’s not compulsory to like them. I enjoy them though. Horses for courses and all :)

MissionItsPossible · 19/01/2018 12:45

You make me feel so high
When I talk to you
I retort to a tinkly little laugh (tinkly little laugh sound effect)
And ask: (Everybody together) "Are you on glue"?

scampimom · 19/01/2018 12:46

YASSS!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 19/01/2018 12:47

Some musicals I don't mind, others I cringe.

But 2 musical-related things have made me snigger recently - one of them was in Nutjob 2, where the female squirrel tries to burst into song and everyone shouts her down very quickly, and the other one (older) was this

littlemisscomper · 19/01/2018 12:50

YABVU!! Musicals are awesome! How can this not give you chills:

Katedotness1963 · 19/01/2018 12:50
