Am I going deaf or does everyone on telly mumble theses days?

Just watched first episode of Pretty Little Lies - God, the mumbling!

First series of House of Cards, I kept putting subtitles on because I couldn't understand Kevin Spacey.

Watching McMafia the other night, I kept saying to DH "eh, what did he say?" to which DH replied "Dunno"

Am I going mutton and jeff or does anyone else struggle to follow dramas because of the bloody mumbling?

Is it just the tv you're struggling with or is it conversations/noisy backgrounds too.

Only mention it as, being someone who at 37 has quite often had to put the subtitles on the last couple of years, I have just been diagnosed with moderate sensorineural hearing lost and am awaiting an appointment to have bilateral hearing aids fitted.

Yes Jux, it’s called Points of View.

I think its a con to make us all go and buy soundbars?

CaraBosse1 · 21/01/2018 23:54

Kyyria - just certain TV dramas.

Agree that loads of dramas are unwatchable these days and What is the new(ish) trend of having music whilst the person is talking during documentaries?

They could be sitting in a empty room like a library looking at a historical artefact (for example) telling you about it but can you hear them? Can you buggery because there is a full orchestra blaring over their voice!

LadyChatterlysLoofah · 22/01/2018 06:22

Can I muddy the waters again by pointing out that there is no problem hearing RADIO (usually R4) drama, where even naturalistic conversation is well enough enunciated to be easily listened to at relatively moderate levels? And usually whilst busy doing several other tasks too.....

Was watching Brittania last night and had to rewind a couple of times to decipher the mumbling.

And a case of gabbling..Louise Minchin on BBC News is great at this,,,and getting her words the wrong way round,,but i like her,,More than Naga Munchetty

StorminaBcup · 22/01/2018 11:00

Homeland is terrible for mumbling too. I know they’re meant to be covert but that’s a whole new level.

VeganCow · 22/01/2018 12:02

Its the same at the cinema. Mother couldnt hear a lot of Star Wars the Last Jedi due to the mumbling. She complained to Vue! I had the same problem with The Commuter at weekend in a different cinema.

I am putting subtitles on for a lot of stuff at home. Actually come to think of it, its usually stuff with American accents, plus I dont get a lot of their dialogue anyway. Netflix shows like Luke Cage and stuff. Even if I do hear it, I don't get some of the 'street talk' so the subtitles help me know whats going on.

bluebellsparklypants · 22/01/2018 19:50

afrikat - really you can re set it up like that? That would help me, I find on most shows/films that I can't hear what their saying so turn it up then the music blares out so turn it down

Justaboy · 23/01/2018 12:42

Jux Justaboy, thanks for that info. In your opinion, which tv manufacturer provides that best sound? Clarity is what I'm looking for

Can't recommend any as such we have a Sony of some 5 years of age and on its own no better or worse than most. However hook up a decent hi-fi system to it - another matter entirely:)

The main problem is that the TV has no cabinet to speak of anymore thers nothing to mount a decent sized speaker on thats the real problem you don't see decent hi-fi speakers in flat panel TV arrangments with the very rare exception of the electostatic type.

Best TV we ever had for sound and vision was a Phillips K70 series one, seperate bass and treble tone controls sounded superb and the pictuire, cathode ray rube with colour diffence drives looked almost real would even then blow away todays high definition pictrures.

So suggested is connect up the hi-fi to the TV most all have audio outlet sockets these days.

It would help if they didn't cast a load of actors who all look like each other. DH and I typically sit there trying to work out if the person in view is a goodie or baddie, the mistress or the wife etc. so with all that plus the mumbling we quite often give up.
