Name changed as very identifying. Apologies - this may be long.

I ordered a morilee wedding dress in July and paid 50% up front. Reputable local shop who have been in business for about 40 years.

Pre Christmas I heard a few rumours about shop being in trouble and closing down - closed on some Saturdays with no explanation, Facebook chat etc. Phoned shop who claimed this was a smear campaign and not true; there had been a change of ownership but that was all. At that point they said my dress was due in today (18 Jan) and I received an unsolicited phone call from them later the same week to confirm delivery date of 18/01. Shop then closed for 3 weeks and have now reopened with MASSIVELY reduced opening hours.

Fast forward to today - no dress and no offer of new date other than a vague "the weekend" or "early next week". And that they'd phone me when it was in - and then pretty much hung up.

So - WWYD? AIBU to doorstep the shop tomorrow? Do I contact the supplier direct? Do I look for another dress? Tried really hard not to panic in December but it's now a month later and I'm even more concerned...

You’re not in East London are you- a very similar thing has just happened near us and a friend ended up sat on their doorstep until they admitted they didn’t have the dress. She fought hard for a refund but has yet to get it and owner gone AWOL.

Poshindevon · 18/01/2018 17:52

Your orderd the dress in July 2017 did the shop give you a date when the dress was to be collected?
6 months seems a long time even for a wedding dress.
First I would contact the suppliers. If the dress has never been orderd then you need to send a "letter before action " to the dress shop recorded delivery. Giving them 14 days to return your deposit or you will make a claim in the County Court.
If the dress was orderd you need to demand a delivery date. Once again do this in writing. Failure to supply the dress means you can also claim in the County court.
Good luck.

I was quoted 9 months from the bridal shop I looked at!

I would definitely doorstep them for answers assuming they will be open

Sugarcoma · 18/01/2018 17:59

Yes you need to doorstep them asap and don't leave without the dress or a refund. If they are about to shut down for good you may never see either again.

weddingsaresostressful · 18/01/2018 18:01

Thanks both. No, I'm in Scotland. They told me in July late Jan/early Feb (which was in keeping with the other shops I visited) so today seemed a reasonable date. I didn't ask them for a date btw they volunteered it.

So neither of you think I'm overreacting by wanting to go to shop tomorrow and make a bit of fuss? I assume I'd be pursuing the shop rather than the manufacturer for my deposit?

Cross posted! I'm glad I posted - even if I'm not really liking your answers much! OH thinks I'm panicking but you ladies don't seem to agree Confused

You are not overreacting by wanting to go to the shop and make a bit of a fuss......
I'd be going there and making one hell of a fuss!

Hope this is resolved very quickly for you Flowers

TrinitySquirrel · 18/01/2018 18:05

Did you pay on credit card? You will be covered in that case. I would doorstop it too and demand the dress.

Allthebestnamesareused · 18/01/2018 18:06

How did you pay the deposit? If on a credit card in the worst case scenario if they went into liquidation the credit card co will refund deposit

Graphista · 18/01/2018 18:10

6 months is industry standard for bespoke orders.

www.scotcourts.gov.uk/taking-action/simple-procedure

Is the procedure in Scotland.

Yes I would doorstep them if I were you and request proof the order has been requested of the manufacturer and when they are saying it will be delivered to shop.

Sadly not uncommon in bridal industry. Hope you get this sorted Flowers

Monoblock67 · 18/01/2018 18:11

Are you in Glasgow OP?

Monoblock67 · 18/01/2018 18:11

Whoops posted too soon! I only ask because if you are then I think I know which shop you’re referring to

Graphista · 18/01/2018 18:12

Me too mono.

weddingsaresostressful · 18/01/2018 18:15

No @Monoblock67 I'm in Fife - trying not to out myself any further lol!

I think I did pay on credit card (MasterCard iirc - need to check) although it may have been my Visa debit. Just feeling a bit sick now. I honestly expected you all to tell me to get a grip and stop worrying!

wheresthel1ght · 18/01/2018 18:30

If visa debit speak to. Your bank abiut chargeback you might be covered. Not sure what the time limit is however

BirdieBeeBella · 18/01/2018 18:36

If you’re on FB then there is a group called Blushing Brides Scotland if you post on there someone may be able to help you.

Graphista · 18/01/2018 20:47

weddingsaresostressful · 18/01/2018 22:13

Update/further question...

Does anyone have experience of dealing with Morilee direct? They refused to deal with me on the phone as their contract is with the shop.
