Neighbour knocked on door at 6.30am for this reason

To tell me my dustbin had blown into her garden and was repeatedly smashing against her wall.

It’s awkward as even if I knew about this, I doubt I’d have knocked to retrieve my bin back and relive her in the fear I’d have woken her up...

I’m not sure if she knew her rubbish had blown all over the street

I can imagine, took is 4 attempts to find a gas station that was A) open and B) had fuel!

Strangely I find it quite enjoyable and exiting!!

yes, seriously, people should secure their bins. Whilst it won't do much in the worst storms, it would help in many cases where trees are mostly fine and bins are flying around.

The only trees on the ground this morning in my area were on the train line and a couple of country lanes. There were more bins on the road than acceptable!

mumonashoestring · 18/01/2018 18:19

@Sugarcoma the etymology of 'pearl clutching' is imagery of a well-to-do woman instinctively clutching at her neck/chest in order to protect her precious pearls in a moment of shock, so yeah, it means exactly what I think it means. And no, there's no health and safety implications beyond taking responsibility for your own safety. That's just a convenient excuse for the lazy. It would take the Council days to get around to clearing all of the roads if no landowners, farmers or residents got off their arses and helped and if the choice is a few minutes of noise from a chainsaw or a lot of noise from a crash and associated emergency response (let alone what it would mean for the poor sod who crashed) it's a bit of a no-brainer really.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 18/01/2018 18:26

Stupid question but how do you secure a bin? Mine are in the front garden and I have nothing to secure them to.

BigBaboonBum · 18/01/2018 18:29

Ohhhh the days when 6:30 felt early

Aspatria · 18/01/2018 18:30

We built a "bin shed" kind of thing. It depends on your home and the bins you have, there are plenty of various solutions

ProfessionalPirate · 18/01/2018 18:32

I suppose there's always the option of cramming the entire family near work in a shitty 2 bed flat in a grim neighbourhood, or to give up work entirely and live in on benefits in a council property and a free goat

No, the choice is accepting a lower paid job away from the city and living in a cheaper area. It's a question of career and living near the city versus work/life balance.

RadioGaGoo · 18/01/2018 18:34

Bit passive aggressive that. Any normal person would have just moved the bin themselves. So she had to get dressed, knock, open the garden gate and watch you go into her garden, retrieve your bin and lock the gate behind her.

What a faff over nothing.

HAHAHA

Yes, because things are THAT easy in real life. Cheaper areas are full of jobs for anyone to pick. People only commute because they chose to.

Just read the threads from people struggling, who can't afford a holiday, who can't even afford to buy a home...

bummypicklemummy · 18/01/2018 18:40

@Aspatria sorry I thought someone meant should secure trees.

PearlyGatesMontenegro · 18/01/2018 18:43

well it was your bin, it was prob making a noise and damaging her wall

REALLY 5plus?? Damaging her wall?? it's a fucking wheelie bin not a bulldozer HmmHmm

Some people on here are weird.

And are not at all neighbourly.

For shame.

Skowvegas · 18/01/2018 18:45

We were without power for a week during the last storm also. DH has to teach me how to oil change and troubleshoot the generator we were useg it so much!

I moved to a hotel for five days... Blush

peachgreen · 18/01/2018 18:47

Good grief. I get up at 5.40am and I would never dream of knocking on anyone's door before 9am - maybe 8am if it was really urgent. Of course 6.30am is too early to knock for a conversation about bins!

Bexter801 · 18/01/2018 18:48

@Aspatria you just sound angry at everything!! Like the type that would wake someone up at 6.30,to inform them their bin is banging off your wall!

Fekko · 18/01/2018 18:48

I was awake from about 4:30 listening to all the banging and crashing. It wouldnt occur to go charging over to a neighbour to lunch them for having clattering bins.

I’m up at 6 but anyone getting me at the front door that early would be traumatised (it takes me a while to look human in the morning these days).

ProfessionalPirate · 18/01/2018 18:53

Have you even looked? I made the move a while back and in my experience jobs are easier to come by away from london. It took a while to find the right position of course, but it was worth it. My salary has gone down, but my standard of living has improved and I can now afford to buy a house. Obviously it depends what your job is, but I'm assuming you are a fairly well paid professional type as commuting 3+hours a day must cost a fortune.

Just read the threads from people struggling, who can't afford a holiday, who can't even afford to buy a home...
But surely you realise that situation is far more common the nearer you get to london? In my current area, house prices are low and can be afforded even on fairly basic wages. The cost of living is so low, minimum wage is near enough the living wage. It's totally different to the south. Londoners live in such a bubble.

Sunbeam18 · 18/01/2018 18:53

All of those people refusing to believe anyone could sleep beyond 6.30am, OK with you if I come and bang on your door at 11pm (perfectly normal time for me to be awake) to ask you to move your bin?

Leilani24 · 18/01/2018 19:00

Ok - I didn’t know windy weather was forecast so couldn’t have prepared for my bin blowing away. I just wouldn’t knock on someone’s door at 6.30am. I’m sure she wouldn’t have liked it if I knocked on her door at that time to tell her that her rubbish had blown all over the road.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 18/01/2018 19:01

I suppose there's no point securing your bin if you've left it out for collection though. I can't imagine our dustmen (refuse collectors?) untying it.

I always think it's best to try and stay on peaceful terms with neighbours even if they're a bit annoying. It's just too awkward to live next door to someone you tried to punch the fuck out.

rothbury · 18/01/2018 19:01

What's your AIBU?

I am on my way to work some mornings at 6.30 and might have missed her door knocking.

Without knowing your AIBU it's hard to comment, but I would imagine she was sleep deprived and wanted you to sort out the bin - what exactly are you struggling with?

Posters who get up at 8.15 - do you not have DC to get ready for school? Jobs to go to? School starts at 8.15 here. Even if my workplace was next door, if I started at 9 I would want to be up by 7 Smile

Aspatria · 18/01/2018 19:02

ProfessionalPirate
Not only I looked, but the only reason I moved in London (or around London) was because I didn't even found a job anywhere else. I also looked again, very seriously, before settling my kids in schools, but was not considered anywhere because I didn't live in a specific area yet.

I can't afford to move, then find a job. I need to work before I relocate everybody. In my case, I can afford a decent big-ish house, in a decent area with great schools, holidays, and little luxuries because of my job in London. I just can't afford the same accommodation in Central London. If I am made redundant tomorrow, I will walk into another job straight away.

We still have bins flying around though, because people don't secure them properly Grin
