to think this self-service check out counter staff was rude?

So I was at the grocery earlier. I noticed after scanning that one tomato can was dented so I was moving it away. However the machine detected the bar code. And then detected it again with every move, resulting to four scans.

I asked the staff for help (she was standing there, I assumed she was monitoring the self-checkout counters and helping if there are problems) and she said,

"Never put your items in front of the scanner!" in a stern voice.
Then she said, "Now I have to remove them one by one!" in a stern voice still.

I was surprised (actually more shocked because of her tone), and mumbled my apologies.

Now I realise I was wrong and it must be annoying to her, but uhm, it's her job to troubleshoot problems that arise in the self checkouts?

You were polite. She was an arse. Whats to discuss?

NotAgainYoda · 19/01/2018 06:45

She was a bit rude

I think those tills are a recipe for stress, personally

I never use them - they make me rude. I have been known to swear audibly at the feckers

NotAgainYoda · 19/01/2018 06:46

... the till, not the person

NotAgainYoda · 19/01/2018 06:47

Bt I do think an adult should be able to get over the fact that a person used a certain tone with them

Candyandpop · 19/01/2018 06:50

What's wrong with a slightly dented can??

DumbledoresApprentice · 19/01/2018 07:03

Dented cans carry a small risk of being contaminated with botulism. The advice is to discard badly dented cans.

OP- she was rude. You didn’t do anything wrong. Two of my local supermarkets (a Waitrose and a Co-op) recently put in self service machines without scales. This Waitrose one even allows you to remove items that you have scanned incorrectly yourself without needing to wait for a member of staff to do it. I think maybe they are realising that the weighing areas are more hassle than they are worth.

SoupDragon · 19/01/2018 07:05

Chances are she just has a stern voice. Some people sound like that no matter what they are saying. Nothing she said was actually rude.

Friedgreen · 19/01/2018 07:08

So you scanned a dented can four time? To be fair my Waitrose would have just laughed at you.

Falmer · 19/01/2018 07:17

YANBU. She was rude, condescending and unpleasant. You should definitely complain, they need feedback from customers. Imagine if this was a vulnerable customer, such as learning disabled. She's paid to help at the self service tills, not chastise people and treat them like children. Definitely complain and tell them you'll stop shopping there if the staff are rude again.

Pleasedontdrawonyoursister · 19/01/2018 07:41

Wait, why would you not want a dented can of tomatoes?

Oblomov18 · 19/01/2018 07:41

No one wants dented cans.

Falmer · 19/01/2018 07:50

The dented can convo is not really helping op, is it? She was shocked by the attitude of a staff member and has come on here for advice. End of.

nikkylou · 19/01/2018 08:00

Id have been sorely tempted to say don't worry about it then, I'll leave the whole lot. Have fun removing all my items individually. Tempted but probably not brave enough too. I hate it when shop assistants treat you like a petulant child for doing something a little wrong.

Wingedharpy · 19/01/2018 12:14

My apparent contradiction Dreaming, was an attempt to describe the presumed thoughts of the checkout woman as opposed to the reality from the customers point of view.

8misskitty8 · 19/01/2018 15:26

Some posters were querying how the op could scan a can more than once without putting in the bagging area.

Some machines are calibrated to allow 3/4 scans without bagging before the machine will refuse another scan. This is done due to some items being too light to be detected on the bagging scale, like birthday cards or wrapping paper, to save a staff member having to check.

Self service scans can also have the scales turned off by a supervisor if someone is going through with a trolley full of the same item or full of different items so they can be easily scanned and put back in the trolley.

Falmer · 19/01/2018 15:51

Who cares? The machine was wrong or OP was wrong or the sun's up in the sky! The question was, is the shop assistant rude? In my opinion she was and OP should complain to give feedback, which I'm sure would be welcome. OP may even be given a 20 pound voucher as a pp further up thread.

malmi · 19/01/2018 16:44

One of the Tescos near me has got self-checkout machines without scales, so you can go as quickly as you like, but it's really easy to double-scan if you're waving items around in front of the scanner. It requires a more precise technique to prevent this.

barefoofdoctor · 19/01/2018 16:52

You put your hand up like when asking a question at school? I love this and am going to do so next time my self serve machine ballses up.
