Snow chaos here last night, loads of cars stuck on roads, crashes, more snow. Amber warning in force until 8, Police saying don't travel unless you have to.

Council being crap as usual and won't be making the call on whether schools are closed until 7.30. There is someone manning the council social media so it's not like they can't get a message out. Lots of people will have already left to try to get in by 7.30. They should have decided overnight.

Grrr.

Round here it's head teachers who make the call once they have heard from the caretaker/people who work at the school and live close by. They also talk with other heads of schools in the city.

I am also in Scotland and think it is right the head teachers make the call. My council covers a large geographical area both rural and towns. Lots of people were tweeting the council this morning that all schools should be shut as the roads were impassable but where I am the main roads were much better today so if enough teachers could make it then those in catchment are only up to 2 miles maximum away on mostly decent roads.

I think everyone does their best just last year out DD school said they would close at 7.30 by 8.00 they decided to open as the snow had already disappeared. I remember as a child having a half day off school after only 3 teachers turned up, they soldiered on until lunch and sent us all home.

I don't really agree with you OP. I think in these circumstances it is acceptable to leave publishing the decision until 7 -30am if holding off until then means they are more likely to make the correct call. I feel for you and the inconvenience but I am confident the vast majority of school kids aren't leaving for school or even breakfast club until later than 7'30am.

How strange for a council to make the call??

around us the HT makes the decision. This morning most of the local schools were closed, ours was open.

How strange for a council to make the call??

Why?

Councils are responsible for schools in Scotland
