Restrict internet access via mobile phone

LomasNZ · 16/01/2018 23:10

I read a useful discussion on restricting internet access for teenagers at night here.

The challenge I have is I can switch the internet off but then my DS just uses his data on his mobile phone. I pay for that so can restrict that too, I guess.

Before I go there, however, is there any way I can block 3G/4G/5G data usage that from home? Or via the telco perhaps?

Thank you.

How old is your D.C. And what phone does he have?

Whatshallidonowpeople · 16/01/2018 23:11

Just stop the data when he's used up his allowance. He'll soon learn to ration it

WalkingEverywhere · 16/01/2018 23:12

...and what mobile provider do you use?

ManchesterGin · 16/01/2018 23:12

I use an app and set the phone to turn off data access at a certain time. It also gives them a certain number of hours per day if you choose.

He is 15. He has an iPhone and is tech savy. We are just about to switch to 2Degress for his telco. An NZ provider.

MancheterGin - what is the name of the App you use. The trick will be can he delete or bypass the app himself on his phone. I was wondering if there was an off the phone solution.
thank you.

I use qustodio. I had to pay for the year but it's worth it. My son is only 11 but it means i can see where he is and where he's been.

You need to set up 'restrictions' on his phone. It's very easy. You can look up how to do it on Apple or elsewhere online. APPLE - info on restrictions

Yes, the low-tech solution is the only way to go. Take the phone away from him at night. Keep it in your room, and switch it off or bloody thing will pip and flash at you instead. TNS about this with him.

I’m not tech savvy so scusi

We switch the router off so no WiFi

Then can you not change his restrictions passcode on his phone so you can go in when you choose and turn the data off at source? Of course it means you physically need his phone - is this a problem?
