Has your child had nasal flu vaccine and why?

Sitting on the fence about giving dc nasal flu vaccine (verging on saying yes). Dh doesn't want them to have it.

So aibu to ask if you have given it/would give it to your dc? And what reasons?

Yes, because I wouldn’t wish flu on anyone. I don’t want the dc to suffer when there’s something which reduces the chances of them suffering. I don’t want them to spread flu to others who could suffer. Why would you not vaccinate Confused?

Randomlywondering · 16/01/2018 14:02

Is your surgery still offering it? Mine isn't anymore

KittysMyName · 16/01/2018 14:02

What Simultaneous said ^

Why wouldn’t you vaccinate???

SparkleFizz · 16/01/2018 14:03

My older 2 DC have had it to help protect them against catching flu (and yes, I know it can never be guaranteed to be 100% effective). I’ve had flu once myself and it was pretty unpleasant.

My youngest DC hasn’t had this vaccine as he’s too young.

PurplePotatoes · 16/01/2018 14:03

Yes my DD has had it for exact reasons given above. Why does your husband not want them to have it ?

2tired2bewitty · 16/01/2018 14:05

The 7 and 3 year olds have had it, 1 year old is too small. They’ve had it because I don’t want them to get ill, or make their little brother ill, or MIL who has had some serious health issues in the past year. We also live in a slightly unusual community where I know it would pass about very quickly if anyone did catch it, based on the chicken pox outbreak last year Shock

PinkAvocado · 16/01/2018 14:05

Yes because I trust the doctors who said it is advisable, because ‘flu can be dangerous to anyone who gets it and especially to the groups that are given the option of having it done on the NHS, because there are those children who cannot have it and so by him having it it may help them not to, because my mother’s immune system is compromised at the moment and generally because I couldn’t think of an evidence based reason good enough not to. Mostly because I didn’t want him getting ‘flu and this helps.

MissT84 · 16/01/2018 14:06

Yes there are still clinics offering it.

I said yes as I don't want dc getting flu.

Dh says no as the vaccine makes them poorly. It's not the same flu as this years anyway.

I can't go without his concent as he is their father too and think parenting is a joint decision....but would like personal experiences and opinions for and agaibst rather than biased Internet articles.

Crunchymum · 16/01/2018 14:07

Yes. Me and the 5yo and 3yo have all been vaccinated (me because I'm pregnant)

NotAChristmasCakePop · 16/01/2018 14:08

DS's class had it at school and he's had it before when offered through the GP. DD is 'too old' and has never had it. I figure I'd rather have 5 minutes of upset and the protection offered than not.

IrkThePurist · 16/01/2018 14:08

He's wrong. It does give protection against Australian flu, they may get flu but will only get a mild version of it. Do you want to nurse 2 kids with flu while you come down with it yourself?
Flu kills the young and the old, and the risk of any vaccine is vastly outweighed by the benefits.

Mumto2two · 16/01/2018 14:08

Absolutely yes. Children are the main spreaders, which is why vaccination was extended to include school age children upto year 4. And while flu may well be a fairly self limiting illness for most children, for some children like my daughter who has an immune defect, it can have far greater complications. When vaccination take up is low, the virus is free to spread and mutate, so the more people who vaccinate, the better.

TheClacksAreDown · 16/01/2018 14:08

The vaccine does not make them poorly

noeffingidea · 16/01/2018 14:11

My 17 year old had it, she attends a special needs school and all the children are offered it. Many of the children have physical problems (she doesn't) and getting the flu could be very dangerous for them, so it's for their protection as well as her own.

demirose87 · 16/01/2018 14:11

My two eldest have had it. DS (9) had it in school. DD (4) had it in doctors surgery. DD has had it very year since she was born as she had bronchiolitis at 11 days old and was hospitalised. She's more prone to colds and flu because of this and I have two younger babies that I don't want it to spread to either.

grasspigeons · 16/01/2018 14:13

yes because he is an at risk person - he is young, he has allergies and he has asthma

I am a natural worrier and I did think that the vaccine wasn't really very effective last year and my son did seem to get minor side effects but for me they were better than flu and flu complications.

Cutesbabasmummy · 16/01/2018 14:13

Yes my 35 month old had it in November. Real flu is awful and Id rather he didn't catch it.

Flowers456 · 16/01/2018 14:14

The vaccine didnt make my kids poorly.

Cath2907 · 16/01/2018 14:14

Mine had it. Flu is awful. Anything I can do to reduce her risk of getting flu is well worth it in my opinion. What is your DHs reasoning for saying the kid shouldn't get the jab?

Cath2907 · 16/01/2018 14:15

Didn't make my kid poorly.

Bodicea · 16/01/2018 14:15

Yep got my 4 year old it earlier in the season and my two year old as soon as they turned two last week. Neither was particularly ill - eldest had a slight temp the next day. That’s nothing compared to the real thing.

stitchglitched · 16/01/2018 14:15

Yes, my 3 year old had the nasal spray and my older DC had the jab privately as he was too old to have it on NHS. Neither had any ill effects.

RedPanda2 · 16/01/2018 14:16

The vaccine will not make them poorly. They should have it as it helps to protect more vulnerable people.

Skowvegas · 16/01/2018 14:17

Mine have all had the flu injections because we're in the US where they don't do the nasal spray but they do offer the injection to pretty much everyone over 6 months.

They've had it every year for the last 10 years, never got sick from the vaccine, and only had the flu once (the year swine flu hit hard).

DuggeeHugs · 16/01/2018 14:17

Yes. Flu is horrid and dangerous and I'll take whatever protection they can offer 2yo DS.
