I think I have broken my toe...

Apparently I should man up and stop being a wuss, and am creating a drama over nothing...

My little toe has been really painful for the last couple of days, when I turned my ankle over and fell face first into a pile of brambles whilst wearing flip flops (yeah, thanks dog!)

The bone next to my little toe is protruding really badly, it's actually quite fascinating to look at, and it hurts quite a lot. Won't lie, I am not incapacitated, but none of my shoes fit, driving is extremely painful, and I just wondered if anyone has any experience in the podiatrist (ism?) area...

are broken little toes a huge problem? I googled (obviously) and the conclusion was that I happened all the time. Therefore I would be unreasonable to waste Nhs time getting an appointment to just examine my mutant foot, right? Dp says I am utterly ridiculous he won't be saying that when he has to look after the baby on his own

If it looks straight then tape it to the next toe. If it looks at a funny angle get it looked at. I broke 3 toes last year and was in agony for over a month. Bin the flip flops.

thinkivebrokenmytoe · 16/01/2018 00:00

It's not the actual toe, it's the bone next to it, like almost an extra toe trying to burst out of the side of my foot, sorry, it's really hard to describe...

Oh and yes, flip flops binned immediately. What the hell was I thinking wearing them? I still blame the dog...

Ps how did you know they were broken? Stupid question I suppose.

I've broken a leg, wrist and arm but nothing was quite as painful as my broken toe!

All your bodyweight is distributed through your feet/toes which is why it's so fucking painful!

I'd get it looked at. A first aider strapped my broken toe up and I ended up having to have it re-broken & set a couple of weeks later as it was bent at an angle and was healing very wonky.

RainbowPastel · 16/01/2018 00:03

I had bruising all over the top of my foot. It swelled to double the size. My GP sent me for an xray.

thinkivebrokenmytoe · 16/01/2018 00:05

Ah see maybe I am just being a fuss pot... I have broken my shoulder before, and also quite a few of my teeth which hurt like hell (in separate incidents, one was falling off a wall alcohol induced, the other was falling off a horse not alcohol induced

This doesn't really hurt, more of a throbbing, it's just really uncomfortable and I am not too impressed by the new shape of my foot...

There is bruising along the top of my foot, not over the little toe though.... I am guessing that it's not broken then or it would hurt more...

But then why the heck is it sticking out so much!!!?

I broke my toe 6 months ago. I ran around the corner and kicked a hard object. I knew it was broken because

a) it hurt like fucky fuck
b) I couldn't walk or put any amount of pressure on it (was limping badly and using my heel) and
c) when I looked down my toe was pointing north west instead of straight up

Also after a few hours it started to swell, but surprisingly only a little. A week later and the entire top half of my foot was green with bruising though, not kidding. The toe itself didn't bruise too much.

All they did was X-ray it then strap it up with strong Elastoplast. I had to change it every day, 3 strips for full support. I also had a boot and dp called me iron woman for 3 weeks.

It's weird how such a tiny little digit can impact your ability to get around. I appreciate my toes much more now. Good news is it doesn't take long to heal (if you let it rest).

I'd get it looked at op.

BuckysRoboticArm · 16/01/2018 00:21

Mine really only hurt if I put pressure on it, it didn't hurt when I was sat still for example. However I think some people break toes in such a way that isn't that painful and they can still walk on it?

I couldn't wear shoes on it for about 3-4 weeks. That was due to pressure pain though.

I do think it needs looking at to be sure if something is sticking out! Maybe post a pic if you want to, that might help (only if you feel comfortable doing so).

thinkivebrokenmytoe · 16/01/2018 00:24

Haha don't want to be accused of being a weird broken toe troll!

But it is painful and sticky outty...

Ok, will post a photo, you will have to excuse the horrid nails. I haven't painted them since before I had my baby (ten weeks ago)...

It's the wonky bit on the side that worries me...

I think I have broken my toe...

That looks like a tailor's bunion to me, and a normal one on the right hand side. Was there defo no sign of any bump or lump prior to the fall?

PriaMaicel · 16/01/2018 00:39

Maybe your bunion is making it look worse than it is, but I'd book an appointment with a gp to have it looked at.

thinkivebrokenmytoe · 16/01/2018 00:42

Yeah so I may have a bunion on the right hand side, this is very true, but the one on the left? I normally just have a nice smooth foot!

Just googled a tailors bunion... you may be right! But do they come up overnight? And are they sore??

OP posts:
BuckysRoboticArm · 16/01/2018 00:44

Ah I see what you mean now op. Hmm if that wasn't there before the fall then yes I'd be concerned!

I know nothing about bunions so can't comment on the above but yes I do think it's worth a gp appointment.

thinkivebrokenmytoe · 16/01/2018 00:49

Also nope, no sign of anything prior to the fall.
That's why I was concerned.

Thanks for the helpful advice though. A tailor's bunion... I feel like a complete idiot now! It was just odd that it coincided with the fall, and the odd bruising.

Any tips for getting rid of them?!

Any tips for getting rid of them?!

Visit your GP and get it confirmed before trying to get rid of it!

That would be a bit too much of a coincidence to me. Get it checked as something might have been displaced.

thinkivebrokenmytoe · 16/01/2018 01:04

Good plan. Although GP appointments round here are like hen's teeth...

Can I use my child's doctors appointment to ask!

tararabumdeay · 16/01/2018 01:10

One broken little toe hampered my swimming for approx six months. I.E. it flippin' hurt.

Get it checked out. Strapping it up is specialist not just about sellotape and brown paper.

CocaineAndCaviar · 16/01/2018 01:15

They're definitely sore and painful! That's what I'm thinking too, they develop over time which makes your bump a bit of a mystery!

They can be treated with bunion pads or sometimes surgery, and can get quite nasty if left untreated. But I'd get to a GP when you can, even if it is a long wait.

Kakeklair · 08/04/2018 20:39

I just had bunion surgery on both feet!! You definitely have a bunion but the left looks more like a swelling.
