To ask if Ibuprofen overdoses can cause kidney damage

Ds has a history of overdosing on Ibuprofen. He's recently had many uti's and doctors are looking at his kidney function. Could this be because of them? All his overdoses were treated with an iv drip.

I don't know whether ibuprofen directly causes kidney problems, but it shouldn't be used if there are already kidney issues. www.kidney.org/atoz/content/painmeds_analgesics has good info.

Hope that your DH gets the treatment he needs.

Yes, ibuprofen overdoses can cause kidney damage, though fit young people usually get away with it. But so can UTIs. And I would not expect ibuprofen overdoses to cause UTIs. So there may be more than one thing going on.

Any non steroidal drug (ibuprofen, diclofenac / voltarol are the usual ones) can cause a decline in renal function when used at “normal” doses in susceptible people, never mind overdoses. Overdosing is definitely linked to impaired renal function.

Recurrent UTI doesn’t necessarily cause renal impairment unless there is some kind of structural abnormality (like ureteric reflux, stones, ureteric obstruction), or the infection becomes more like a pyelonephritis than lower GU tract infection.

NSAID use is not associated with recurrent uti that I am aware of. Agree that there may be a combination of issues.
