Looking after my step dads dog, there away for 2 months been gone only 2 weeks and she keeps whining. She used to whine when they where here. Aibu to ignore her she’s fed watered given treats and let out for a wee huge garden with forest to roam in and taken on lots of walks. She stops whining As soon as she’s eating or stroked if you stop she wines. It’s getting so tedious

She's bored and in need of human interaction. Do you do training with her? Get her learning new tricks?

Are you the only person who can hear her? If so, I would try ignoring the whining as long as she doesn't need the toilet. How old is she? Stroking etc rewards the bad behaviour.

Sounds like she is bored. Does she has any bones to chew indoors or other activities to keep her occupied?

She’s an old Labrador for 4 toys dotted around the house I played with her when I got in from the shop. About 20 mins worth of chasing her toy strokes and chasing me

Is she getting exercise? My lab can whine/groan a bit, but once she's had her walk she just comes back home and sleeps! She's nearly 10.

If she whines other times, it's because she needs a wee usually. Her most recent technique for that is throw herself at the front door with a big thump!

Branleuse · 15/01/2018 18:51

i think shes just missing your dad. Not much you can do

Pickledonion24 · 15/01/2018 18:51

Has a Walk every other day and then every evening we walk her round the garden we have about 5 acres so not a short walk

My dog whines for attention it's their way of communicating. If I am busy I would give her something to chew. It is ok to ignore though, if you are sure she has all her needs met and you are busy.

She's probably grieving for your dad. She doesn't know he's on holiday, all she knows is he abruptly left her, and she doesn't love you as much. Our 11yr old lab died recently and our 9yr old lab has been really down about it. He only comes out of his "sadness" when distracted by people playing with him or cuddles - and he's in his own home with our third dog for company..

IrkThePurist · 15/01/2018 18:59

She could be in pain, or she could be missing her owner.

Branleuse · 15/01/2018 19:29

if i ever look after my boyfriends dogs, one of them settles, and the other one whimpers and whines and paces for almost the entire time. Great dog but i cant stand looking after her here for this reason. She is fine in his house even when hes away, but not in other peoples.

KinkyAfro · 15/01/2018 19:33

My lab is a total whiney if she's not getting attention, if I ignore her she comes and sits on me until I stroke her

Pickledonion24 · 15/01/2018 22:24

I was doing yoga yesterday and she kept nesteling her head in my arms
