Why don’t parents let their babies sleep outside anymore?

All my four slept outside in the back garden during the day, suitably clothed for the time of year. I did have a big pram, but today’s prams are just as suitable. So why dont your babies sleep outside?

It's all changed then. Never knew about that advice. It was never the case when mine were young and it does seem a bit OTT

NapQueen · 14/01/2018 18:52

Mine often napped outside Spring and Autumn. I was always in and out of the yarden hanging washing out or sitting out with a brew. They always had a lengthy nap and were better at sleeping at night too.

They are 3 and 6.

GhostsToMonsoon · 14/01/2018 18:53

Mine did (7 and 5) - for the oldest, napping in pram in locked back garden after getting back from a walk, and youngest would nap in pram or sling when out and about.

Gottagetmoving · 14/01/2018 18:53

A cat sitting on your sleeping child, a bird shitting on your sleeping child, a fox attacking your sleeping child, a wasp stinging your sleeping child.Leaving a defenseless baby outside to its own devices so you can have a cup of tea and do more important things is absolutely neglectful

How ridiculous! People didn't abandon babies outside exposed to dangers! Parks had cat/fly nets over them. Mothers had the pram in view of the window. No one suggests leaving your baby in an unsafe place! It's interesting that people see it as bad, when in houses, people use cleaning sprays and air fresheners, with central heating, dry air....but think that's safer.

Prams!....Bloody auto correct!

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 14/01/2018 18:54

Play pens were wonderful.

Yep. I used to drag that out to the garden too on good days so I could garden/potter with baby safe.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/01/2018 18:54

Whow....they sell grips at Wilko in case you're in need.

PrimalLass · 14/01/2018 18:55

My son's nursery put the 1-2 age kids, and maybe younger, on a balcony for a nap. All wrapped up in a triple buggy.

Roussette · 14/01/2018 18:58

My pram had a cat/fly net so all the fuss about being bitten by wasps or attacked by cats is silly

GreyMorning · 14/01/2018 18:58

Because I can't be arsed to wrestle the pram across the house to the back garden, nor do I want the wheels covered in chicken shit and then rolled into the back of my car or in my house.

GreyMorning · 14/01/2018 19:00

(But mine does get taken out for dog walks most days)

HairyToity · 14/01/2018 19:01

My firstborn did, as it was nigh on impossible to get her to sleep in her cot, but she always fell straight to sleep outside and slept longer. DS was a better sleeper and it was always easy to get him to sleep in his cot.

PeaceLoveAndDixie · 14/01/2018 19:02

My lo sleeps so well outside! I don’t put him out there for a nap but if he falls asleep on the dog walk I park him up outside the kitchen window and he usually gets another hour. He’d wake up if I brought him in. He is suitably dressed, I check him frequently, can hear him when he wakes up and obviously is in a secluded place so no one can see him. Nothing to concern anyone.

Eryri1981 · 14/01/2018 19:06

I think I may be about to give birth in the wrong century!!!

I intend to put DD outside for naps, have already bought a playpen (as I have a dog who thinks every rattle or soft toy bought into the house should be his, also garden is not particularly safe, with no way of changing it, so playpen will be lovely outside in the summer), and DM has bought a set of reins ready. DM used reins with both me and DB who both walked early 9-10 months, and DH is a twin so mil most definitely used reins with dh and his brother, DM and mil both think reins are a great idea.

averylongtimeago · 14/01/2018 19:06

I always used a cat net, so no danger from wasps, cats, foxes or other wildlife. no wolves, bears or lions in suberban uk
In the back garden, near the back door, where I could see and hear the pram from the window. Twins slept soundly, what's the problem?
And yes, I used reins, as does my DD with the DGC.

Fresh air is good for you, being kept in a stuffy closed environment all the time isn't.

Of course, if you don't have a garden or live in an area infested with killer ants or something it's different for you.

Barbie222 · 14/01/2018 19:09

I never did because of the red kites. They did plenty of sleeping outside but it was while I was pushing the buggy.

Roussette · 14/01/2018 19:09

Go for it Eryn reins and playpens are great. One of my DCs could trip up over nothing all the time, saved grazed knees, and the other DC just would run anywhere dangerous! I felt I had control of their safety. Without reins not.

Schlimbesserung · 14/01/2018 19:09

I'd seen crows and seagulls pecking the eyes out of newborn lambs so there was no way I'd have left my babies outside even with a net. I was tempted to try once or twice when they were a bit older, but they would only sleep in a pushchair if it was moving and woke up as soon as it stopped.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 14/01/2018 19:10

Used to leave DS1 out in his buggy wrapped up for a nap then realised that this was probably not the best plan given the amount of fixes round here Hmm

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 14/01/2018 19:10

Mine did, in the secure back garden (youngest born in early 2000's). I used to put them in the pram outside the patio doors and just leave them open so I could hear them. We've moved since the children were babies but I'd do it if I had a baby now too.

EssentialHummus · 14/01/2018 19:10

DD (17 weeks) will only sleep through or nap unaided on alternate full moons, and our garden is down an overgrown side return with the threat (again, sorry) of urban foxes.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 14/01/2018 19:10

(Foxes!)

Kintan · 14/01/2018 19:12

Mine (11mo) does from time to time but only if I sit outside too - I'd never leave them alone in the garden mostly because of foxes and I wouldn't risk them (however unlikely) being snatched..

blackteasplease · 14/01/2018 19:12

My dc did sometimes. more dc2 than dc1 becuase we didn't have much of an outdoor space with dc1 and you could push the pram straight to the bit we had due to stairs.

It's a nice idea though. Means you can leave them asleep for a bit without having to try to delicately prise hats and outdoor clothes off.
