All my four slept outside in the back garden during the day, suitably clothed for the time of year. I did have a big pram, but today’s prams are just as suitable. So why dont your babies sleep outside?

Mine did.
Nos 3&4 in any weather, their dad is from another EU country where all babies sleep outside all year

They're all thriving

@jaimelannistersgoldenhand

They’d probably be used to humans and therefore more dangerous...?

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 14/01/2018 18:09

What's the point?

They sleep longer, you get more of rest from nursing/feeding/juggling crying baby and chance to read a book, have a cuppa, answer the phone, wash some dishes.

Christmascardqueen · 14/01/2018 18:09

My dd does, her 16 month old often falls asleep in the stroller. He gets parked in the back yard and sleeps till he wakes on his own. Even if it’s drizzling and he has the clear cover over his buggy.

Catabogus · 14/01/2018 18:10

My baby has been doing it today! Wrapped up warmly, she napped in her pram for two hours at lunchtime. She would never sleep that long inside unless on my chest. Outdoor naps are fantastic.

OuchBollocks · 14/01/2018 18:11

My 10 month old loves an outdoor sleep in his pram. Apparently I'll be done for neglect now, according to this thread Grin (I park him in the secure back garden where I can see him from the kitchen)

demirose87 · 14/01/2018 18:14

Yes Donny neglect. It would be where I live as I live in a ground floor flat with no outdoor space and have to go through two doors to get outside so he would not be sufficiently supervised.

LightDrizzle · 14/01/2018 18:15

I put my eldest out on the terrace on fair days. I positioned her under a lovely tree branch that moved in any breeze, out of full sun. I always checked on her and never left her to cry, I could hear her from our tiny cottage. I rather unscientifically imbibed the idea that “fresh air” would do her good, and I thought dropping off/waking up to see branches waving and clouds drifting across the sky, made a nice change from a mobile or ceiling.
My mum left us well out of sight and earshot though. I have my suspicions!

eddiemairswife · 14/01/2018 18:15

I had 4 children in the 1960s with a large pram. They all slept outside, well wrapped up in the winter, and slept for ages; and, no, they weren't put at the bottom of the garden and left to cry as so many people seem to assume.

cochineal7 · 14/01/2018 18:16

Mine did. Still to last year. Every nap.

Bearfrills · 14/01/2018 18:17

All four of mine have slept outdoors, youngest still does. She falls asleep on the morning school run so when we get home I come in the back way and leave her parked outside in the back garden to finish her nap. If I bumped her up the step she'd wake up and while she's sleeping I potter around in the kitchen so I can see/hear her if she wakes. Sometimes I park her in the front garden if I want to sit on the sofa rather than the kitchen, the sofa is in front of the window and she's the other side close enough to touch if the glass wasn't there. I don't see what is dangerous or neglectful about it.

Whowhatwhy · 14/01/2018 18:17

Most bizarre. Like a pp, I wouldn't want to put my coat and hat on to sleep outside- why would I expect a baby to? And that's before you think about cats, foxes, birds, wasps, and the obvious risk of dodgy humans. No thanks.

Bearfrills · 14/01/2018 18:18

Yes Donny neglect. It would be where I live as I live in a ground floor flat with no outdoor space and have to go through two doors to get outside so he would not be sufficiently supervised

Then in your situation why would you leave them outside? But in a secure garden where they're in your sight and/or hearing then where is the harm in leaving a baby outside?

HolyMountain · 14/01/2018 18:18

Many of us old timers here have let our children sleep outside when they were babies.

As long as the outside area is safe and secure where you can see them constantly it’s not an issue.

demirose87 · 14/01/2018 18:19

How many times do we see babies outside these days completely unsupervised? We don't. I'm not exactly going to leave my children to cry where I can't get to them. Not everyone has a back garden. My front door opens onto a main road in a rough area so no I am not going ro leave my child outside thank you very much.

mumeeee · 14/01/2018 18:19

If you live in a city the air is polluted so not the good fresh air that you think your babies are sleeping in.
Mine used to sleep in their prams if we were out and about but I never put them to sleep outside if we were home.
I wouldn't want to sleep outside so why make my children do it

Oooocrikeyitscold · 14/01/2018 18:19

My DD for the first 4months (she’s 6 months now). Use to push her in her pram in the garden she’ll fall asleep and would stay asleep if left outside, if I wheeled her in she’d wake. I stated by the French doors reading and checking her every 5 minutes. Optimally she would have slept in her mosses basket with the heart beat monitor on (I could then relax) but she disagreed firmly with. I love being in bed with the windows wide open so maybe she got it from me!

Nanny0gg · 14/01/2018 18:20

Prams are not the equivalent of Silver Cross coach-built ones so nowhere near as comfy, roomy or cosy

And that's why my over 30 year-old DCs never slept outside.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/01/2018 18:20

In a flat? No garden? No problem. You just need one of these 1930s baby cages! Grin

Grilledaubergines · 14/01/2018 18:20

demi well I think it's fairly obvious in your situation that it's not adviseable. For others whose homes don't reflect yours, it's good to do it.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 14/01/2018 18:21

I’ve only had communal gardens so didn’t leave him outside but we would always go for long walks (no car) regardless of the weather

And I do believe getting fresh air every day helped with ds sleeping some children are hardly outside at all

Alexandra87 · 14/01/2018 18:21

My eldest 2 (summer babies) did. Clears up jaundice a treat. They're 7&6. Youngest was December baby so didn't.

StorminaBcup · 14/01/2018 18:22

And that's before you think about cats, foxes, birds, wasps

Confused
MadgeMidgerson · 14/01/2018 18:22

What is the benefit to a baby of being left outside in a pram to sleep?

Does this assist in their attaining some developmental milestone?
