All my four slept outside in the back garden during the day, suitably clothed for the time of year. I did have a big pram, but today’s prams are just as suitable. So why dont your babies sleep outside?

My baby naps so much better outside. Won't nap in her cot. She sleeps in her pram by the back door so I can see her at all times. My dog also sits by the back door keeping an eye on her and usually barks when she wakes which is handy

IncyWincyGrownUp · 14/01/2018 20:52

My middle child, as a toddler, would demand to be put in his pushchair in the garden for a nap. He was an odd boy that liked his own space and knew his own mind. Still is an odd boy to be fair, but it isn’t the fault of the outdoor napping!

Mine do. DD slept outside almost every morning from May- Oct this year for about 2 hours each morning. DS 3 did too when he was a baby. Pram on patio, DD dressed appropriately. I think fresh air is good for them. It's quiet out there apart from birds which is nice. Clearly, I didn't put her out in the pouring rain!

Momo18 · 14/01/2018 21:00

I just couldn't do it, my main concerns are foxes and wasps/insects during the warmer months.

NerdyBird · 14/01/2018 21:05

DD napped outside if that's where we happened to be, in her pram or car seat. I didn't deliberately put her outside as I followed the safer sleeping advice and had her in the same room as me until 6 months. She wasn't in a particular routine until 6 months anyway. She always napped well, sleeps well unless ill and still hasn't completely dropped her nap at 3.5.
Babies napping outside is a choice, it's not necessary if you are not comfortable with it or not able to do it.

Peachesandcream15 · 14/01/2018 21:06

Mine did. Mostly because she woke up every time the pram crossed the threshold of the front door.

Frazzled2207 · 14/01/2018 21:26

I often put mine outside, they're 4 and 2.
One Nursery I visited routinely put all babies outside, they had a special locked and covered area with cctv where they put them all wrapped up!

Mine did if they were already asleep in the pram-but I don't hunk I ever deliberately put them outside for the sake of it.

CaurnieBred · 14/01/2018 21:49

DD(13) had all her naps outside: followed on the family tradition (Scottish), no matter the weather. We had a sheepskin liner for the pram ( Pliko Pramette so nothing special) and if it was cold she was dressed in a snow suit and wrapped in a habdknitted wool blanket inside the cosy toes. If it was raining then that cover would be put on, otherwise we had a Shade a Babe that covered her and would have stopped any stray bird poo/cats. This was the routine and she was more than happy. We followed the routines of she who must not be named, apart from the location of the naps.

Inertia · 14/01/2018 21:59

Mine slept in the pram if we were out and about.

If we happened to be indoors when they were ready to nap, I certainly wouldn't have bothered carting the pram down a flight of stairs to put it in the back garden , then wrapping the baby up to go outside, then doing the whole palaver in reverse. We had a perfectly acceptable cot. There was enough to do without adding an extra 20 minutes of faff to every nap time.

Doubletrouble99 · 14/01/2018 22:18

My mum always put us outside, but in those days we had nets that fitted across the pram so a cat wouldn't get in, could work the same for foxes I suppose. Mum trained as a nanny, children's nurse, midwife and health visitor. She was also a foster carer with up to 6 babies at a time when we were young. She had 3 twin prams she rowed up outside the back door, she could see the babies from the kitchen or back room windows so never too far away. Afternoon naps were often taken outside.

DreamyMcDreamy · 14/01/2018 22:30

Not read all the replies, but I've heard of this being a thing.
It's not something I did, but if you've got a big, enclosed and secure garden in your full view I don't see anything wrong with it for a little bit (assuming they're well wrapped up of course!)
Fresh air is good for you.
I hear the posters saying "it'd be done as neglect nowadays..." no doubt there would be judging noses dialling SS if they saw depending on where you lived (would be normal in Scandinavian countries, I think, but you can bet that UK would be shocked at the thought!)

BlackeyedSusan · 14/01/2018 22:35

being higher up we are further awy from the pollution.

any tom dick or harry can wander round the shared garden and nick the kid/pram.

I xcan;t see or hear them from the flat.

itsbetterthanabox · 14/01/2018 23:14

Still no one has said why they do it? What’s the purpose?

Idontdowindows · 14/01/2018 23:20

It's still quite usual to do that where I am and they even have special babyhouses for it.

Why don’t parents let their babies sleep outside anymore?
AlessandroVasectomi · 14/01/2018 23:23

All 4 of ours slept in the rear garden with a cat net over the pram. The dog would lie beside the pram and would not move until baby awoke and was lifted out. I suspect he associated the pram with walks because it was a daily excursion and he thought if he stayed there long enough it might lead to a walk.

Crumbs1 · 14/01/2018 23:24

Love that babyhouse. Mine did sometimes but it was time mainly. They slept in the pram if we were walking somewhere but mainly they slept wherever I was on school run/shopping/visits etc. After the first couple you can’t really allow them special nap time or the luxury of putting them in a cot/pram for an undisturbed sleep. They catnapped in car seats/bouncy chairs/pushchairs/on the carpet or in the laundry basket.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 14/01/2018 23:25

Still no one has said why they do it?

They have. Read the thread.

itsbetterthanabox · 14/01/2018 23:26

Donny
I’ve read the thread.
No one said why

Lindy2 · 14/01/2018 23:29

DD1 slept outside. I always needed to go for a walk around the block to get her to sleep. If I took her inside when we got back she'd wake within a few minutes. If I left her wrapped up in the buggy in the back garden she'd sleep for an hour. A no brainer for me.
DD2 was very different. She was a sleepy clingy baby who loved being in a sling. She tended to fall asleep in the sling and then slept well when transferred to her buggy inside. She was a winter baby and we were having building work done which probably also contributed to mostly sleeping indoors.

Ham69 · 14/01/2018 23:31

DD, now 8, would only nap outside. I would watch her from the window and put a raincover on her, but it was the only peace i got! The fresh air/ outside noises seemed to calm her down completely.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 14/01/2018 23:31

Oh I’ve obviously imagined it then.

ilovepixie · 14/01/2018 23:32

I'd love to sleep outside all cuddled up nice and cosy under a duvet.

DreamyMcDreamy · 14/01/2018 23:32

Aw, love that babyhouse! Cute, not seen one of those before! What country is that in if you don't mind me asking?
A baby house definitely not the norm in the UK Smile
