To go to late night showing at the cinema

I've been on a lot of night shifts recents but they're finally over! Horrah, however, i'm going stay up all night and go to sleep tomorrow at a normal time (think, not able to sleep until 6am).

Today I woke up at 5pm, it's dark and miserable, shops are closed and I don't want to be in all night. There's a 10pm showing of a film I do really want to watch. Would it be strange to go watch it by myself? I'd just hate to bump into someone but then again most people would be tucked up in bed at that time?

Go! There’s something about going to the cinema that time of night that makes it so much more fun - Great way to pass time and be easier to fall asleep afterwards

Bubblysqueak · 14/01/2018 17:29

Go for it. You might be lucky to have the whole cinema to yourself !!

afrikat · 14/01/2018 17:29

Nope you should definitely do it. I love going to the cinema by myself!

Glumglowworm · 14/01/2018 17:40

Do it!

I’ve been going to the cinema on my own since I was 16 or so. I go with friends too, but equally happy to go on my own. It’s sitting quietly in a dark room watching a film, it’s not a social activity at all.

Battleax · 14/01/2018 17:41

Of course YANBU.

HarrietKettleWasHere · 14/01/2018 17:42

Yeah of course, and with any luck it'll be nice and almost-empty. Best time to go.

AuntieAunt · 14/01/2018 17:43

I'm not sure why but i'm really nervous incase I bump into acquaintances /people I went to school with (recently moved back into the area).

I'm the kind of person who prefers my own company most of the time so i'll go shopping/day trips/abroad on my own but the idea of watching a movie..

Yes go (take treats with you). The chances are that it will be very quiet on a Sunday night anyway.
Oh and The Greatest Showman was really good when I saw it last week.

ShatnersWig · 14/01/2018 17:46

I'm single so often have to go to the cinema on my own. Did so last night.

isittheholidaysyet · 14/01/2018 17:47

My taste in films is different to DH's. It's far easier to go to the cinema alone, late in the evening, leaving DH with the kids, than to find a babysitter, or plan far enough in advance to find a friend with the same tastes, who happens to be free when I am.

Just go, don't over think it.

sonlypuppyfat · 14/01/2018 17:48

I went last night with my friend and there was a woman on her own, I've been lots on my own it's brilliant

Honeybooboo123 · 14/01/2018 17:49

Do it. One of life's great pleasures

Cloudyapples · 14/01/2018 17:50

You’re in the cinema so if you do see someone then they can’t speak to you and way while the film is on (get there for just as the movie starts so no chat time and you won’t miss it because of the zillions of ads and the trailers) sounds like a great plan! What film are yo going to see op?

Akire · 14/01/2018 17:51

Of course what do you think single people do? Hang around in hope a friend wants to go?

HarrietKettleWasHere · 14/01/2018 17:53

I take wine and cheese Blush

DP likes the kind of film where a comic book superhero inexplicably battles another comic book superhero.

I do not.

blueskyinmarch · 14/01/2018 17:53

I went to the cinema last night for a 9pm showing of a film and their were quite a number of people there alone. It was lovely and quiet. I really enjoyed it and am looking to go at that time to another film next week. I was with DH but we might have been alone given that we didn't speak a work during the film - obviously!

AgentProvocateur · 14/01/2018 17:54

I love going to the cinema/theatre on my own, but don’t go if it’s a scary film and you’re likely to be spooked (as I would) in case you’re the only person at that showing.

HarrietKettleWasHere · 14/01/2018 17:54

If it's Darkest Hour though....

It's very good but rather hammy Grin

blueskyinmarch · 14/01/2018 17:58

It was the Darkest Hour we went to see. Really enjoyed it.

MmmmmmBop · 14/01/2018 18:01

I don't mean this unkind, but I think it's very strange to be so concerned that you might be seen on your own, that you would consider missing out on doing something that you want to do and have the opportunity to do. What do you think anyone would think of it of they saw you at the cinema alone Confused? And why would their thoughts on the matter mean anything to you anyway? It's no way to live your life.

I love going to films with friends. I love going with dh. I love taking dc to kids films. And I really, really love treating myself to a film on my own. I really can't imagine giving a shit what seeing me there would make anyone else think about me.

AuntieAunt · 14/01/2018 18:01

Harriet Wine and Cheese?! We have to be friends.

I'd love to take wine, but i'm the kind of person who needs more than one glass and i'm driving. I think we're out of cheese except the loose babybel but not quite what i'm after.

I think i'm going to go, but go all out, including taking a blanket with me. Hey, if anyone sees me they'll judge the blanket and not for being on my own.

Has anyone else got any other suggestions what I can do to get through the night?

Hot chocolate in a thermos?

You'll have a lovely time!

maddiemookins16mum · 14/01/2018 18:05

Harriet - my DH likes 'those films' too. I fell asleep during one particular bore of a film. That said, he comes to see things like La La Land, The Greatest Showman and Bridget Jones' Baby (which he secretly loved) so fair is fair.
