To roll my eyes when someone says their favourite book is a classic

I'm an avid reader and I'm always looking for new books to read so I often ask people what their favourite books are. AIBU to roll my eyes every time someone mentions one of the classics.

I know people do love them and they may well be their faves, but I am quite skeptical as if they are saying it to make themselves sound better.

I've tried reading a lot of classics and I just can't get into them at all! They are pure effort Confused

That's why I took it completely for granted that they were written so, so much later, during the 60's.

I have been... completely hoodwinked about the extent of contempory European ignorance of the horrors of the Reich.

I can't believe it. But after this insight, and her brave and conscientious decision to write about it in such depth when it was a live issue, I forgive EBD for all her other narrative flaws ever.

Grin A big concession? Even the timeline and relative ages?

Chipshopninja · 19/01/2018 17:34

My favourite book is Gone With the Wind...dont think that counts as a classic.

YABU for asking people their opinion then rolling your eyes at their answer...i would probably head butt you tbh.

Even the timeline discrepancies! And the weird medical stuff, the disturbing drugging of Joey and the statistically unlikely multiple instances of twins and trips.

Maybe I am going a bit far here.

JassyRadlett · 19/01/2018 18:47

Grin Grin Those books bring me such joy.

My favourite book is Gone With the Wind...dont think that counts as a classic.

What, the Pulitzer Prize-winning epic that became a film which is regarded as one of the greatest ever made, the greatest box office success in history (adjusted for inflation), set a record for Academy Award nominations and wins and marked a turning point in cinematic history for black actors?

If that's not a classic, what is?

YABU. I love speaking to people about their favourite reads and would never dream of rolling my eyes at anyone's choice (in anything). Just plain rude and would make people self conscious about sharing things with you. I love the classics but after a few in a row might feel the need for something more modern. Also, a lot of my favourite books have nice memories/feelings attached. I reread A Christmas Carol every year. it gets me into the Christmas spirit and I love the message that it expresses. My memory of reading Pride and Prejudice is of summer holidays aged 15 and me being really relaxed and enjoying a leisurely read in the garden after my first set of exams. At aged 36 I also love to go back to the ultimate classic which is Matilda!!! My grandparents bought me that for my 8th birthday, and I still have my copy with their written message inside. I can't wait to read that with my daughter.

Oh I love the Chalet School books! Timeline and obsession with gigantic families aside they're deeply lovely.

I actually did know that about the wartime books but never made the connection between her narrative and contemporary knowledge/attitudes.

Thehogfather · 20/01/2018 14:48

I love the chalet school books too. Loved them as a child and teen too, admittedly they are a comfort read from an adult perspective, but I was in my 20's before I noticed how unusual/ forward thinking she was with some of the content, particularly Nazis and race. As a child it just passed me by.

Thanks thread - now you made me go and download Jane Eyre and read it. Grin

I quite enjoyed it actually.

I'm almost finished Uncle Tom's Cabin, I've found that a bit harder going.
