WARNING: Pity party post ahead:

Yesterday I was diagnosed with a corneal ulcer. I went to Moorfields and have been given an intensive course of antibiotic eye drops and obviously told not to wear contact lenses for a month. I’m miserable because I hate wearing glasses so much. I’ve worn lenses for 24 years and find glasses so so uncomfortable.

I’m blind as a bat so everything seems to be difficult, even drying my hair this morning.

DH is great and is taking me to chose some new glasses this morning and to get some ultra thin lenses put in them. But I just feel bloody ugly and not like me at all.

Sympathy because I don't wear glasses so don't know if they are uncomfortable but I'd just like to say that I love glasses on people! 9 times out of 10 they improve how a person looks IMO. I'm sure you look fantastic Smile

Trashboat · 14/01/2018 09:44

Omg, I feel your pain.

I have suffered the absolute agony of a corneal ulcer, but was told, rather dramatically, never to wear lenses again.

I didn't for a while, but I do again now and I hate wearing my glasses, or as I call them, facial furniture.

I do now and again, when I can feel my eyes are a bit dry or whatever, but I hate it. They make me feel fugly.

phoenix1973 · 14/01/2018 09:44

Flowers i feel the same. I wear strong glasses which make my beautiful big eyes look like raisins or piss holes in the snow. I wear lenses sometimes and feel like me again.
Non glasses cant be expected to understand.

Raisinbrain · 14/01/2018 09:53

I also feel your pain, I've been wearing contact lenses for 20 years and hate wearing glasses. Because I'm so blind my lenses are thick and heavy even though they are the so called "extra thin" ones. They're so uncomfortable and always slip down.

LittleMissPetty · 14/01/2018 09:53

You have my total sympathy Flowers

I had a corneal ulcer last year and, although in pain, I was counting down until I felt comfortable wearing my contacts again. Like you I'm blind as a bat without them so my morning makeup/hair routine was a right pain in the arse and don't even get me started about the rain Angry

It will get better, you'll be able to wear your contacts again and feel like yourself.

LBOCS2 · 14/01/2018 09:57

I know what you mean, OP - I feel 13 again, wearing crappy specs that aren't flattering when I put on my glasses. Never mind the fact that a) I'm not 13, b) I'm not wearing NHS kids' glasses, c) my glasses actually suit me and are quite comfortable. I just can't help shake that feeling. And I'm really blind so no matter how much they thin the lenses they're still quite chunky.

I hope you get better soon. Thanks

I feel your pain too. Menopause has made my eyes so dry I couldn't bear my lenses any more after 35 years of trouble free wear. I'm currently wearing them for short periods only along with really gloopy gel drops. Have to wear glasses for most of the time and feel like olive from on the busses.

GhostsToMonsoon · 14/01/2018 09:57

You have my sympathy. I hate glasses with a passion. I hate the lack of peripheral vision and not being able to see when it rains or when you come in from the outside to a warm room. I think my eyes have got used to my lenses so when I wear glasses they give me a headache; however the last time I wore glasses for a week (on a trek) I got used to them and didn't have that problem.

I hope you feel better soon.

Vinorosso74 · 14/01/2018 09:59

I can sympathise as I too hate wearing glasses. As a toddler DD scratched my eye with a book, it was so sore and red I had a week info antibiotic eye drops and no lenses for 10 days or so. Luckily it was only a scratch but like you I struggled doing my hair, face etc as I'm very short sighted.
Some people look fab in glasses but not me

AlmostCrawling · 14/01/2018 10:05

I've only just started wearing my glasses in the past year I'm blind as a bat. I wear them all the time around the house and when I'm out of town but won't wear them outside in my own town in case I see anyone I knowSad. It's ridiculous as I look bloody stupid squinting and staring blankly at people who wave at me or say hello because I can't make them out. If someone shouts my name I pretend not to hear them as it's easier than not being able to recognise who they are. All this could be avoided if I'd stop being so vain and realise that no one actually cares, I've been told I really suit my glasses. I think other people look lovely with glasses as well but for some reason believe I will be ridiculed for wearing mine. I'm not sure if I was maybe laughed at or teased as a child that makes me feel this way but I wish I could stop caring. I hope you're feeling better soonFlowers

You are totally not BU - I had a similar experience last year (also at Moorfields), where I got diagnosed with uveitis, the doctor told me I couldn't wear lenses for three months and I burst into tears like a massive twat.

I HATED my glasses and how I felt in them but I got some new ones that I liked much more, forked out for the thinnest lenses and it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be - even though I can now wear lenses again I don't mind wearing my specs on odd days.

The other thing I learned is that I have a -11 prescription and was always told that I had to choose the smallest possible frames or my lenses would be too thick but I took a chance and went for a bigger, cat eye shape and they look perfectly fine and I feel so much more like myself when I wear them.

TL:DR - I totally hear you, but I promise it won't be as bad as you fear.

iamloading · 14/01/2018 10:21

I feel your pain, I was -13 and couldn't even get any fashionable glasses as the lenses were so thick, despite buying the £££ version. Anyway for me laser eye surgery changed my life, don't know if it's an option for you once you heal?

Jaygee61 · 14/01/2018 10:22

I wore contact lenses for 20 year. Hard ones to start with then moved on to soft ones but found I couldn’t get on with them at all and went back to specs. I like them now. I like not knowing how old I really look! And my tortoiseshell frame my blue eyes really well. OP treat yourself to the nicest frames you can.

geeup · 14/01/2018 10:33

Totally understand OP. I have had two ulcers diagnosed at Moorfields and had to do the glasses/hourly drops through the night nightmare. Hated wearing glasses - agree they are uncomfortable and make the bridge of my nose ache.
My tips for all reading:
NEVER shower, bathe, swim, water sports etc in contacts. If water ever goes in your eye eg splashed from kitchen tap, rain etc, change your lenses ASAP
Clean eye hygiene is vital - always wash your hands and dry thoroughly before changing contacts
Good luck OP. Hope you find some fab glasses.

Iamclearlyamug · 14/01/2018 10:43

I'm actually the other way round. I've worn glasses full time for over 25 years and I hate the way I look without them. Tried contact lenses several times and always hated them.

Probably because I'm so used to them, but I was even offered laser eye surgery and refused it because I don't want to give up my glasses

Commuterface · 14/01/2018 12:07

Hi everyone thank you so much for your lovely replies. I felt sure I was going to get slated for being a vain arsehole Grin. I am reassured to know that so many of you feel the same way I do. The shock of having an ulcer in my eye was bad enough (and the hourly drops for 48 hours!!) without the added stress of feeling like crap in my old glasses.

Anyway We have just come back from town where DH has treated me so some lovely new glasses with ultra ultra thin lenses. A friend of ours is an optician at the shop and he spent about an hour with us helping me find the best and most comfortable glasses we could. He has even fast tracked the fitting of the lenses so hopefully I’ll only have to wait a couple of days before they are ready.

I’m still not feeling brilliant about it but now I am, at least, feeling a lot more positive.
