Would you take a child out of school for 2 weeks of Year 9?

It’s not my child I hasten to add. I’m not against taking children out of school per se but I’m just trying to understand what year 9 is like and what the impact of an absence at that time of year might be as I’ve been asked my opinion and my gut reaction is it’s not a good idea.

So I’m mainly curious to hear from people who are ok with children being taken out of school in principle if there are any around!

The end of October start of November is where half term usually falls

If you intend to go ahead regardless could you not use half term for one of the two weeks?

I wouldn’t personally, ds is year 9 and they have just started language and science gcse syllabus at that point

Also if your dc then has any major illness like flu they’re really going to have a low attendance and knowledge gap

I would if I could but I'm a teacher so no go on term time leave. As long as the child is willing to catch up it can be done.

YellowMakesMeSmile · 13/01/2018 21:38

No, there's too much work to miss out on and completely unfair to expect teachers to supply catch up work if a parents choice to take the child out. Hospital stays or chicken pox etc is different.

There are thirteen weeks a year and 52 weekends to go away in,

PumpkinPie2016 · 13/01/2018 22:08

I wouldn't - at the school I work in, we start GCSE's in Y9 so it is important work that they will miss.

As an aside, I have to say it irritates me no end when parents choose to take their children on holiday during term time and then expect me to provide work for what they are missing - it takes up more of my time which is limited as it is.

Just take them away in the school holidays!

No never

Of course it’s fine. School is a waste of time. Much better to spend two weeks lying on a beach in Benidorm. That sort of shit doesn’t get taught at school.

Italiangreyhound · 13/01/2018 22:20

Really depends why.

Educatingbrigita0 · 13/01/2018 22:31

Didn’t expect teachers to help my children ‘catch up’. Subject plans very clear for all terms week by week as are exam topics .
It isn’t a regular thing for us , but once in their whole time in secondary school for a family event on the other side of the world . They also got to spend a couple of days in a secondary school there too which was a real experience .
And the learning experience on a famous beach was fantastic !

"Subject plans very clear for all terms week by week as are exam topics"

Not all schools provide this at year 9 level.
There's no need to be so smug about it.
