To think a basic potty will be just fine

I have no experience with potties or potty training so I'm just going off what I would have had as a child. I'm more than happy to be told otherwise.

We are starting to think about potty training DTs and I mentioned to my mum I was going to pick up a potty over the weekend, when she started telling me I simply must get this all singing all dancing fancy one her friends grandchild used. Apparently it sings and gives praise with lights and makes the whole process really easy.

I was planning on just getting a basic plastic potty or two.

AIBU to think not everything has to be all singing all dancing state of the art to be fit for purpose?

If IABU can you please recommend a 'modern' potty? Grin

I think this might be the one she was talking about

My sil got that one. DN won't even entertain it, it freaked her out and now she just uses the toilet. I got a mothercare one with Thomas on, and a really cheap sturdy one from Sainsbury's, both were great with my ds.

Soubriquet · 13/01/2018 10:32

I bought a fancy schmany singing potty...

And bought a big standard £3 one from Wilco's for travel.

Guess which one got used more? Ended up selling fancy potty for £10 after paying £40

Soubriquet · 13/01/2018 10:33

Also bought a toilet seat and steps, which got used very quickly.

Kept them for my Ds who we are hoping to potty train later this year

Pickleshickles · 13/01/2018 10:34

Just get a smaller toilet seat cover thing and skip the potty, you're just making it a two stage process which isn't needed really.

ghostyslovesheets · 13/01/2018 10:35

I used a toilet seat and never bothered with a potty - better if you have a downstairs loo

greenlynx · 13/01/2018 10:48

We had a fancy one with music and lights at first , it was real problem! DD was scared of it first and then tried to play with it. We replaced it with £1 potty ( one in bathroom and one in bedroom) and they worked much better!

Madonnasmum · 13/01/2018 10:58

And if you buy more than one make them identical or they'll insist on using the one furthest away!

Loyaultemelie · 13/01/2018 11:02

£50?? do agree with one the middle comes out though as emptying the other ones is a nightmare. Dd2 is making the odd attempt at the moment but she is very much the type where everything goes better when it's her idea and then she was ill after new year which set her back a bit. I also have a portable one for the car when she really gets the idea but it doesn't separate unfortunately

Falconhoof1 · 13/01/2018 11:03

I bought quite a fancy one. DS never used it. Went straight to a soft seat you put on the toilet (but was still insisting on using that when 7yo😂)

wysteriafloribunba · 13/01/2018 11:06

50 quid for a potty Shock. That's insane. Why just why????!!!

I did shell out for a potette which was useful when travelling as ds would often take one look at the loos whe we were out and point blank refuse to go near them. Can't say as I blamed him.

RatOnnaStick · 13/01/2018 11:14

I got a cheap one for £1 at an NCT sale. Neither child used it much after the first week, as soon as they were able to hold it in long enough to reach the loo they did and the potty was ignored.

The IKEA one with the removable centre is great for easy emptying and cleaning. We also got a very small one which was handy during the initial phase of taking it with us when we went out for emergency use in the car, and is still in fact in the car for longer journeys (urgent wees and car sickness Confused)

Oldraver · 13/01/2018 11:21

Yes basic one will do the job and easy to clean out

The only thing I did splash out on was a Bumbo Toilet trainer seat. I had a few others and DS used to fall through as he was so little. The Bumbo was very soft and supportive

TookyClothespin · 13/01/2018 11:23

We have 2 "pourty" potties. Both the same colour - 1 for upstairs and 1 for downstairs. Easy to empty and clean. Works fine.
No point getting a singing one, we praise DD ourselves. Potty training has taken for ever, but that's because DD is so bloody stubborn, not because the potty doesn't sing Hmm
A potette plus is a must for out and about!

MissT84 · 13/01/2018 11:27

We had an ikea potty..... It was fine.
We got a cheap asda one for at nans house and it was quite a bit lower, the ikea one is slightly higher so easier to squat on and stand up from, and the front was high enough for no fountains over the top.

I recommend the ikea basic one.

2 children potty trained using the same cheap ikea ones.... no all singing flashy ones here.

CorbynsBumFlannel · 13/01/2018 11:51

We got one with a cushioned seat that came off to use on the toilet as dd complained the basic potty dug into her legs. She was a chunky toddler though.
Ds was perfectly happy with a basic one.
