Hello all, just wondering what your take is on this, especially pet owners.
AFAIK the girl I live with has not given her cat a proper meal since Tuesday afternoon/evening, as she has been busy with work and socialising. AIBU to think that she should consider giving it away if she's too busy to buy/give it food? Is a handful of treats once a day really enough to keep a 2 yo going (I have only ever had dogs and rabbits but feel this isn't right)?! Feel really sad for the cat so have given it some scraps but also not my responsibility to feed...

That's disgusting. Report to RSPCA, the cat needs to be taken away from her.

Italiangreyhound · 12/01/2018 23:26

Just phone RSPCA and get the cat taken away. She should not have a plant let alone a pet.

riledandharrassed · 12/01/2018 23:28

So the poor thing is starving because “it’s not your responsibility to feed” ????

Are you joking? Feed the f’ing cat . You’re as bad as her if you live in the same house sorry

ThatsMyCow · 12/01/2018 23:30

Just give it away! Poor thing. I know it's not your responsibility, but there's two adults there and the poor thing is being starved.

BattleCuntGalactica · 12/01/2018 23:31

Don't fuck about, feed the cat if she's neglecting it, and when she comes back then get her told.

user1495056632 · 12/01/2018 23:31

I have given it the scraps of chicken dinner that I have but I am loathe to go out and buy food. but i may have to.

Oh FFS you are being ridiculous!! Go and buy the cat some fucking food before you have a dead cat to deal with. This is absolutely unbelievable that you feel 'it's not your responsibility'. Would you watch a starving child cry and die of hunger because you cba? Would you?

Omg not many things get me riled up but when it comes to animals I don't speak too kindly. PLEASE buy this innocent being some food and call RSPCA/SSPCA/CATS PROTECTION asap.. anyone as it will then have at least a chance of surviving.

Your friend is a fuckwit.

ObiJuanKenobi · 12/01/2018 23:39

Feed the damn cat. You're aware of its neglect so it is now your responsibility too until you can talk to the owner and make a plan from there.

rocky4 · 12/01/2018 23:39

Can I also add, it's £1.75 for a box of 12 sachets of food from Aldi. Or even cheaper for a bag of dry food. I will send you the money myself if that's the issue. Heck where do you live and I'll bring it around myself and after the cat has eaten I will take it with me!

ObiJuanKenobi · 12/01/2018 23:41

Oh and if your mate has only been giving the poor thing treats get it a drink ASAP

user1495056632 · 12/01/2018 23:42

heard loud and clear, will be feeding asap. thank you all, i was being q naive and not sure of what to do but this has put it into perspective.

StickThatInYourPipe · 12/01/2018 23:42

Don’t mean to be a dick but are you sure she hasn’t fed the cat?

My two eat so fast it can be the difference of dp feeding them when he gets up and me coming down 5 mins after and the food has gone. We constantly have to ask each other if they have been fed becuase they are greedy and will beg even if they have just had a meal!

Greensleeves · 12/01/2018 23:44

No need to jump on OP, it's not her bloody fault! Not everyone can suddenly budget for food for a pet they don't own.

I would call RSPCA. Poor kitty Sad

LoniceraJaponica · 12/01/2018 23:44

"So the poor thing is starving because “it’s not your responsibility to feed” ????

This ^^

And please do not give the cat milk. All cats need water to drink.

So, this cat hasn't had a proper meal for several days because you feel it isn't your responsibility? Hmm Angry

Weedsnseeds1 · 12/01/2018 23:46

Cats have quite complex nutritional needs. They can't survive on scraps ( a dog could, at a pinch, if it got enough of them) due to lack of taurine.
You need to have a conversation with your flat mate and in the meantime, Aldi or Lidl food is actually good quality and cheap, so if it was me I would feed the poor animal.

ClaudiaD13 · 12/01/2018 23:48

Yes, mine are the same. Very greedy, always look starving, always have empty bowls, always fed.

Are you certain the cat is not being fed?

rocky4 · 12/01/2018 23:55

I didn't mean to be so harsh, and I'm aware this isn't the OP fault. If they had left out the last sentence of their OP and that they are reluctant to go get some food, then I would have had a different reply.

From someone who has owned dogs & rabbits you'd like to think they are aware a handful of treats a day is not enough. And if they are not aware then that is what our good friend google is for.

riledandharrassed · 12/01/2018 23:56

Where are you based ? I’m sure someone here will take off your hands at this rate

StickThatInYourPipe · 13/01/2018 00:01

ClaudiaD13 glad it’s not just mine! They have been a pain in the arse all evening, we’re fed at 17:30-ish then by 18:00 they are under my feet in the kitchen because I dared go anywhere near where the treats are kept!
Take away arrives and they are trying to steal food and one has now managed to snipe a bag of dreamies without me realising it had dropped out when unloading the shopping and had ripped the fucker open!

To anyone else they may seem like they haven’t eaten for 2 weeks but at the last vet app they were both boarderline of being overweight (used to be house cats, now they go out so we are sorting the lack of exercise they were doing before hand)

Op how do you know the cat isn’t being fed?

BlindYeo · 13/01/2018 00:05

You say "as far as I know". How you are so sure the cat isn't fed unless your flatmate specifically says she hasn't fed the animal all this time?

My cat is a greedy beggar. Cleans a plate of food in moments. Starts begging again five minutes later when the next person arrives in the kitchen. We have to leave notes for each other so we aren't fooled by the lying.

Also, a handful of dried cat biscuits might not look much but it is surprising how easy it is to overfeed a cat by thinking it isn't enough.

ClaudiaD13 · 13/01/2018 00:43

Yep, one of mine - Beau or Bobo Fat the Star Wars Cat as the kids call her is an overweight indoor cat. I carefully weigh out her expensive special biscuits and it looks like nothing. Anybody watching would think she was underfed. She is still overweight and will meow at anyone who'll listen for food. Has even been found in my sons bedroom raiding the food kept for his fish.

wombatron · 13/01/2018 00:56

@ClaudiaD13 not kitty’s but one of my dogs is the same. Special diet... measly looking portions that promised to fill them up..raided vegetable rack when no one was looking. Put the vegetables away, took a running jump at the bin to knock it over and spill contents - I gave up pretty quick.

Some animals are just hungry. Veg thief eats so quickly he doesn’t chew his food. Occasionally he regurgitates perfectly formed kibble Hmm

Op please feed the cat. Twice a day with fresh water whilst you wait for the RSPCA to collect. Poor mite.

Reddlion · 13/01/2018 01:27

feed kitty please

Royalfuckup · 13/01/2018 01:30

How do you know it hasn’t been fed?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 13/01/2018 01:54

Give op her head back. Shes not the villan here. She's already said she's going to feed the poor creature.
