What is your mortgage payment?

On the back of the thread about wages, where a couple of posters have said that what constitutes a good salary depends partly on how much your mortgage is, just wondering what mortgage people pay per month?

DP and I pay 1800 a month which I think must be quite a lot... it takes a big chunk of our salaries!

OP posts:

£1800/month which comes in at 20% of DH's take home pay. House is worth 1.5m. We were lucky to be able to put down more than half on the house when we bought it.

Nquartz · 12/01/2018 21:15

dontcallmethat we don't have any other assets. We have a decent amount in savings (£10k) but DH's pension is pretty worthless so we are aiming to be mortgAge free by 45 so we can save the £1,100 a month we currently pay for the mortgage in a stocks & shares ISA for retirement

LittleLaura1 · 12/01/2018 21:16

I'm deducing from this that most of you all live in cheap areas of the UK.
Houses for under £200K? A dream!

You are very lucky to be able to buy so cheaply.

We paid our mortgage off at 60. We overpaid for many years and also put 2 kids through uni, paying for their accommodation which overlapped as there are only 2 yrs between them, which actually meant we had outgoings equal to 3 mortgages for a few years.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 12/01/2018 21:17

Yes, to rent our (2 bed house in London zone 3) would cost around £1700 per month. We have a 230k mortgage and that costs £900 a month. House worth 650k.

MakeMisogynyAHateCrime · 12/01/2018 21:17

£479 but we have an overpayment direct debit set at £200 to go into the mortgage every month and will occasionally throw another £50 add it.

I couldn’t put a % figure on it because my take home wildly fluctuates on a monthly basis.

We live in the NW so property is vastly cheaper than when we sold in Bristol so we (thankfully) had a large deposit coming to this house.

LittleLaura1 · 12/01/2018 21:19

Where we live in the SE you cannot buy a house for much under £300K.

I'm wondering where on earth people live where they can buy something/ or it's worth £80K! amazing.

vasav · 12/01/2018 21:19

Two houses and no mortgage! I would HATE to be in debt. My husband has worked very hard so we actually own our homes.

DavidGandyfanclubpresident · 12/01/2018 21:19

£404 per month but we overpay £800 currently. About £100k left to go.

LittleLaura1 · 12/01/2018 21:20

We have a 230k mortgage and that costs £900 a month. House worth 650k.

So you had £400K as a deposit /equity? How?

MakeMisogynyAHateCrime · 12/01/2018 21:20

vasav

Hmm
comfortandjoy · 12/01/2018 21:21

1895 pcm. Live in an expensive city. We'll be paying until we're 75. It's almost half our income.

Greyhorses · 12/01/2018 21:22

We both work very hard and are still in debt Hmm

We pay £400pcm and owe £78k on a tiny house worth £90k as it’s all we could afford at the time , going to be stuck here forever!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 12/01/2018 21:22

We’re moving into our first house next week. Mortgage will be £900 pcm, which is about 23% of our net income after childcare vouchers have been deducted. Current rent is £695 pcm.

GinSolvesEverything · 12/01/2018 21:22

@ButchyRestingFace - not quite that much, but there are two of us, and we are both pretty senior in our jobs. DH more than me. We live in a very expensive city and realise we are lucky.

To compare to rent, we actually rented out house out before we moved in, and the income from that was only half the mortgage amount (obvs we paid the balance).

shardav · 12/01/2018 21:22

Mortgage is £600 a month, which includes paying 10% extra.

House is worth £140,000 approx.

Only 9 years left to pay and then a good few years mortgage free before retirement.

Our monthly payment is less then DH weekly salary.

puffyisgood · 12/01/2018 21:22

We're both aged about 40, our mortgage payments are small because we bought quite a while ago & don't have a big mortgage. A 75% mortgage on our house now would be about £60k a year, i.e. unaffordable for most people including us.

Salene · 12/01/2018 21:23

£1200 but we over pay each month so it’s actually £1800

BayLeaves · 12/01/2018 21:24

LittleLaura1 Not necessarily, it could just be that they took out a £300k mortgage on a £350k house several years ago, and it has since increased in value by £300k...

Our house was £300k in 2014 and it's now worth £400k so it's feasible...

Andromeida29 · 12/01/2018 21:24

£667 p/m our house was bought for £225k BTL on previous home £178 for 30k mortgage but rental income of £650.00 p/m

Itscurtainsforyou · 12/01/2018 21:25

Just switching our deal to take ~£150 off a month, but am ShockShock at those who pay £1500+ a month, that kind of money terrifies me (although I know there's not much option in some areas of the country).

justwonderinglike · 12/01/2018 21:26

£0 here. Our critical illness insurance paid out this time last year. The best thing to happen after a very torrid time. Before that it was £510. Thought we’d be rich by now but after being able to relax a bit, we don’t seem to be accruing any cash Shock

Snowyjoey · 12/01/2018 21:26

£556 on a house I bought for £140k 2.5 years ago which is now worth £165k or so. I have £120k left. Just starting out on the property ladder!

About 15% of our lowest joint monthly income (bonuses quarterly on top and a commission based job for DH)

We could technically afford a mortgage of about £1500 a month but the thought utterly terrifies me (I'm very risk adverse)

windowdresser44 · 12/01/2018 21:27

£710 but I pay £1500 and have a plan to get rid of the remaining £65k in 3 years. House worth about £330k.

I can't tell anyone in rl, most of my colleagues are just buying first homes or renting.

DramaAlpaca · 12/01/2018 21:28

Ours is roughly 20% of our income. It'll be paid off in a couple of years.

jemmstar1980 · 12/01/2018 21:28

£988 per month with 12 years left we owe £150k and house is worth £375k. I’m 37 and had my first mortgage at 22. This is my 4th property.
