cost of half term holidays

I like skiing, but haven't been for 5 years, when I went to Bulgaria. Total cost £1500 for 2 of us in Feb half term.

Just been googling - it is now that much EACH for that week, before even adding lift passes, boots, skis... and everywhere in France, Italy etc is much more expensive.

Won't be going.
Cannot possibly afford that.
And the reason I can't go the week before or after when its HALF the price?
I'm a teacher.
Grrrrr.

Yes. Its annoying. A friend of mine bought a studio appartment cheaply near bulgarias ski resorts. If you could invest like that might pay off in the long term.

Bluelady · 12/01/2018 16:44

It would be more whenever you went with the £ being worth so much less against the €.

hidinginthenightgarden · 12/01/2018 16:46

Everywhere is stupidly expensive during school holidays.

Ilikesweetpeas · 12/01/2018 16:48

I agree, it’s so frustrating. Prices have increased with the puoubd falling but half term prices are so much more expensive than the weeks before it after

I never have understood why holiday companies get away with this...other than because they can.
Surely the cost should be the same but rather than put pressure on the holiday companies they fine parents for taking kids out of school....

FitBitFanClub · 12/01/2018 16:49

Well, it depends how you are wanting to do it. We've always been tied to February half term for the same reasons, and we've never spent anywhere near £1500pp. We've been to France every year. It can be done, but not if you're looking at catered luxury chalets or hotel packages.

nailpolishchipped · 12/01/2018 16:54

Parents may get fined for taking the kids out...I understand that it is sometimes worth it - pay £60 but will be saving 100s off the holiday cost.
I can't do that.
Restricted to holidays.
Yes it was my choice to be a teacher, but the pay does not cover the extra costs of the holidays!

Oh dear lord. Holiday companies buy hotel rooms and seats on flights in bulk and flog them to their customers. The hoteliers and the airlines charge them more (if they have a British clientele) in half-term because they can. It's the law of supply and demand and it cannot be repealed.
