To think the height of a car makes a difference in spatial perception?

I have a (very old) Ford Focus - a small car. DH has a (slightly less old) estate. I hate driving it because it's long, wide and (to my mind) low to the ground, and the roads around us are dangerously narrow. In my head I know the roads are just wide enough to accommodate the car, but when I come up to a pinch point I hold my breath every single time, and I bloody dread parking the thing.

My Focus is falling apart and we are debating what I should get to replace it. I want a bigger car because I can't fit our large dog in mine and now that we have DCs I would like to be able to transport more than 2 of them around and a bigger car makes me look a teeny weeny bit more "upscale" than a battered old Ford Focus. DH insists I "don't need" a bigger car and anyway, I shouldn't have one because I struggle so much driving his.

I'm certain that a car that was higher off the ground would make a difference - in fact, my parents have both had Honda CRV-type cars and I found them much easier to drive (though the fact I was on wide American roads may have had something to do with it). I have tried the Mitsubishi Shogun over here, which is mammoth, but because it's so much higher off the ground I felt like I had a much better picture of what was around me than I would in DH's estate, which may even be smaller than the Shogun.

DH swears there is no difference between driving the Saab estate and the Shogun, but I believe that may be because, as a man, his brain can factor in spatial differences I can't.

Am I talking rubbish?
