Unrealistic to expect responses from Indeed.co.uk applications by 18 year old Dd

Am I?
How does an 18 year old get a response to any job application short of trawling the local shops?

MrTrebus · 12/01/2018 12:00

By law she doesn't have to have her date of birth visible so disable that part?

MrTrebus · 12/01/2018 12:00

If you think she is the problem I mean

DotCottonDotCom · 12/01/2018 12:01

Do you have a local Facebook jobs page?

Royalcoronation · 12/01/2018 12:03

Why is it unrealistic? You haven't said what you think the problem is?

Graphista · 12/01/2018 12:03

When was the last time you were job hunting? Employers RARELY respond to unsuccessful applicants these days. Contrary to SOME mners opinions there aren't enough jobs so there's hundreds of applicants per job (not an exaggeration some sites tell you how many people have applied).

Might not be a bad idea to get her cv reviewed though can't hurt.

Figgygal · 12/01/2018 12:04

Recruitment practices are shocking these days don't even get acknowledgement after interview some some places let alone from applications I think you just need to accept that. It's not happening because of it's not happening because of her age

CreepyPasta · 12/01/2018 12:05

Go direct through the employer rather than using Indeed. Their website changes the format of most CV's and makes them difficult to read. Most employers will also be advertising the role through their own websites

Snowysky20009 · 12/01/2018 12:06

You don't have to put age- but need to put dates of school, uni, exams etc- so easily worked out. I don't see why they don't ask it? It puzzles me.

teta · 12/01/2018 12:07

Dotcotton we do. But there’s never anything on it. We live in a very small rural town. That’s not a problem though as she has a car and can drive and has some work experience. But she is getting no response to even the jobs she has experience with . And phoning up these places does no good either as they all recruit via Indeed.

YABU, my dd got her first full time job at 17 almost 18 via Indeed.

Butterymuffin · 12/01/2018 12:09

Go in and ask to speak to the manager, so she can make a good impression in person and say how keen she would be to work there next time something comes up?

SheSparkles · 12/01/2018 12:13

Sorry, I misread your original post (sleep deprivation through illness)
I think the employment market has changed so much since we were 18, and other than local independent employers, nothing seems to be done at a local level.
I might be wrong but I do think some of the online applications are designed to screen out so many applicants on some spurious basis, and unless you know how to get past this, you’re on a hiding to nothing

BlueberryMarshmallow · 12/01/2018 12:13

It’s really tough, I remember applying for 45 jobs in the space of a week and heard back from less than 5! If she is after part time min wage work I would print off a pile of CVs and go to your town centre/ retail park and dish them out. If it’s full time more permanent work I would carry on with the indeed applications. Fingers crossed for her.

teta · 12/01/2018 12:21

It’s a gap year job she’s looking for .She’s already working a couple of days a week and looking for another two while retaking an A level this year. She’s very bright, personable and a hard worker , but unfortunately this doesn’t come across on Indeed !

OP posts:
Graphista · 12/01/2018 14:23

It does come across - but you're assuming it's only YOUR child that's a bright, personable, hard-worker.

It's honestly VERY competitive out there. How long has she been looking?

Also "hard working" but doesn't want to have to "trawl local shops"? Hmm

When my dd was looking last year she printed off cv's to hand in personally which she did in our local high street AND the shopping areas in the next big town and the city which is 90 mins away. She also used more than one website. How many applications has she done?

Graphista · 12/01/2018 14:24

Also if you live in a rural out of the way place is she making it clear on applications she has her own transport?

GlitterUnicornsAndAllThatJazz · 12/01/2018 14:26

Someone was on here the other day in bits because they had applied via Indeed for loads of jobs over the past 6 months with no response and it turned out indeed had been warping her CV all along.

teta · 12/01/2018 15:25

Graphista I’m sure there are lots of bright 18 year olds around .I’m really not assuming mine is the only one. There are also a lot of useless ones working in our local town.Judging by many of the ones we saw last Sunday.
GlitterUnicorns how do you check whether your cv is ok on Indeed?

OP posts:
peachypetite · 12/01/2018 15:27

The job market is brutal at the moment.

MrsJayy · 12/01/2018 15:30

Dd did applications through indeed and Monster got nil response she to trawl shops and bars before she got her P/T job.

Alot of employers are looking for specific hours and i think students are better talking to them face to face to negiciate days they can work.

MikeUniformMike · 12/01/2018 15:32

I wouldn't rely on Indeed. I would go round trading estates and leave a printed CV, addressed to the HR manager, with a cover letter that describes what she can offer the company and the role she is looking for. I would also look on company web sites and contact them by e-mail. Local papers may have jobs in the classifieds.
I would also try pubs and shops etc.
When she visits places to leave her CV, a smart clean casual appearance should be fine.
CV should indicate that she has her own transport.

These days you are unlikely to get any feedback even if you have attended an interview.

19lottie82 · 12/01/2018 15:34

What experience does she have? What sort of work is she applying for?

Get her registered with as many recruitment agencies as she can find. They often have clients looking for school leavers for entry level office jobs.

Snowysky20009 · 12/01/2018 15:35

No help but my ds when looking for a job for the weekends, went to al local business'. He was offered 5 interviews and 3 positions. Never filled in anything online except for McDonald's when he first started looking.

Snowysky20009 · 12/01/2018 15:36

As a PP mentioned check her online cv with Indeed. An OP mentioned that she had been sending her cv out for 6 months before realising that info had been left out, making her cv next to useless.

Snowysky20009 · 12/01/2018 15:40

As she's 18, has she thought about care work? She has her own transport, care companies are always desperate for employees- could do full time, part/time, nights, days or bank. Just an idea. Good luck to her.
