To tell this shop owner I think her behaviour is unprofessional

I am buying a few expensive items from a shop (expense relevant because I expect a certain level of service when buying expensive items). I went into the shop a few weeks ago and selected the items I want. These items aren't just for me so last week the other person involved went to see the items themselves. Once they confirmed that, yes, they agree with my selection all was good and I wanted to go ahead and make the order. There was some rush to this as the items have (for a limited time) been placed on sale. This was further complicated by the fact that I don't live in the UK so needed to pay for the items from overseas using a foreign bank account.

I found the woman I dealt with in the shop (the owner) extremely unprofessional for the following reasons:

  • All email communications from her are extremely sloppy. She does not proof read so there are many spelling errors/typos. Whatever email program she uses is plain text so the emails look scruffy anyway, no footer image or contact details.
  • She has hounded me to pay for these items, despite knowing that I was waiting for the other person to confirm. I get explain to me that the discount is for a limited time so please confirm ASAP but to keep emailing so often is a bit much
  • I told her I would make a card payment over the phone expecting that she would ring the transaction through and then do a "cardholder not present" payment on the till. Nope, I called to give my details and her response was oo let me just get my pen. No! I don't want you writing down my card details! The connection was so bad that the call was terminated before I gave all the details.
  • I asked for a load of details to do an international transfer (you need more info than for a regular transfer) but she only gave me the usual account no. and sort code. When I pointed this out and asked her to refer to my previous email she sent me some details saying "this is what you need for an international transfer" but obviously hadn't read my request because she didn't give me all the details I needed. This was followed up a couple of hours later with a "how's the payment coming" email.
  • I really need/want these items, especially at the sale price, so I don't have much option but to buy from her

AIBU to email her letting her know that I find her behaviour very unprofessional and detailing why that's the case?

You sound hard work OP. You come across here as if you've got a broom stuck up your arse. If you are dealing with her in the same high handed way you're undoubtedly making her nervous.

Am I the only one desperate to know what the "items" are?

Orchardgreen · 12/01/2018 09:23

Maybe it's the person who wanted a live-in Auntie nanny because her husband wouldn't hold the baby, then couldn't decide where to go in the private jet?

BitOutOfPractice · 12/01/2018 09:24

Are you by any chance, the person a few weeks ago who expected the supermarket cashier to kiss your arse for a £100 shop and then got the hump when the cashier said cheerily "have a nice day"? Was that you? Was it?

Orchardgreen · 12/01/2018 09:26

Maybe the "items" are gold-plated penguin bollards?

BitOutOfPractice · 12/01/2018 09:30

Or diamond-encrusted penis beakers.

LostInShoebiz · 12/01/2018 09:34

Platinum cheque cancellers

BitOutOfPractice · 12/01/2018 09:35

A key to a Mexican house inset with rubies?

PoisonousSmurf · 12/01/2018 09:36

What a snob the OP is!

WickedGoodDoge · 12/01/2018 09:39

I would say you are a difficult customer and I wouldn’t want you as my customer. The amount of time she’s wasted on you has probably well eaten into the profit on any potential sale from you.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 12/01/2018 09:39

She has a shop. She has goods you want.

Why do you think you’re in any position to tell her how to run her business?

MarthasHarbour · 12/01/2018 09:40

pigeon me too. I have visions of an island all to myself Wink

Jigglytuff · 12/01/2018 09:40

The irony of someone who types a sentence like this: "I get explain to me that the discount is for a limited time so please confirm ASAP but to keep emailing so often is a bit much" complaining about poorly written emails is just lovely.

I know who you are too OP. There's really no point in you name-changing.

Is that you Hyacinth?

SnowFairyDust · 12/01/2018 09:48

Here I am - important overseas shopper. I want a discount, I want you to write pretty emails to me, I want you to wait until my friend makes her mind up. I want you to process the transaction as I order you to using an overseas account and process you are unfamiliar with.
I’m itching to tell you that you’re unprofessional and I want you to apologise and be grateful for my custom.
Still having trouble seeing it?

⬆️ This, exactly this, you sound like you don't deserve to have the lovely items OP!!

JingsMahBucket · 12/01/2018 09:50

I agree with @mirandasings and @whiskyowl. OP, I think YANBU as well. Basic good grammar and spelling should happen in business communication. And saying you're dyslexic doesn't cut it after a certain point. Get proofreading tools and others to help you.

I have and had several colleagues who are dyslexic and I almost never see mistakes in their work and they're writing in English when it's not even their first language! I don't understand the disdain for good English language skills that I encounter on MN. This disregard would get you fired in any place I've worked.

Anyway, if the shop owner doesn't know how to put through an international payment then maybe she should learn. It's 2018 FFS. Maybe she should actually read the OP's email/instruction for what info to send instead of just waving it off.

expatinscotland · 12/01/2018 09:59

Fucking nora! Still in Maui, eh? Hope this gal tells you to sling your hook.

'Anyway, if the shop owner doesn't know how to put through an international payment then maybe she should learn. It's 2018 FFS.'

Why should she? She's under no obligation to sell internationally at all and if this doesn't put her off, that's saying much.

Either shit or get off the pot, OP.

Jonsey79 · 12/01/2018 10:00

Why do I sound entitled and pushy? Is it too much to expect a proof read email these days?

Is it too much to expect a proof read OP these days?

PortiaCastis · 12/01/2018 10:03

Yeah you can e mail her but dont be surprised at the response you get for being entitled and a pita

BattleCuntGalactica · 12/01/2018 10:03

You sound like a spoiled princess.

People working in retail are always run off their feet during sales/gifting times of the year, especially so at weekends. Cut her some slack. They're just things. 🙄

BitOutOfPractice · 12/01/2018 10:04

AS a business owner I know what a pain in the arse getting large international transfers are. The bank will have her answering all sort so of questions about money laundering f the amount is enough

MadMags · 12/01/2018 10:12

Are you at least going to show us pictures of your house when it’s finished?

You being a design genius and all...

TheFaerieQueene · 12/01/2018 10:13

Phone lines are bad from Maui I hear! Grin

ooohbetty · 12/01/2018 10:13

Whiskeyowl - have you ever worked in a small/independent retail or service environment? If so you must have worked in a lovely little bubble. I can certainly state that if I was in the position where I had to email a customer and deal with an international payment to secure a sale etc in service environment I work in it wouldn't be as simple as ringing the bank to find out how to do it, in fact having to email the customer would be an absolute chew on in the environment I work in it just wouldnt be worth all the effort. Sometimes it would not practical, viable or even good business sense financially because it would take up so much time for one customer who may not come back for goods which may not have much profit in it to start with.
I would have so many other customers to deal with where they would be much easier to serve at such a high turnover that I couldnt just contact the bank to find out how to deal with a transaction i didnt know how to deal with, it would be a big pain in the a**se and It would affect the over all service of the business where i work if i started doing stuff like that.
Sometimes it isnt just that simple especially if the request goes completely against the grain of how the business operates and its a busy business.
I hope I make sense!

Arkangel · 12/01/2018 10:13

The irony of the spelling mistake within the paragraph bitching about the woman's spelling... Hmm
