Sitting here quietly fuming as I wait at least 20 minutes to speak to someone from virgin media's customer services - I always get straight through if I want to pay a bill . Why can't they offer aring back service??

You are being totally unreasonable. Don't you know that all their staff are still trying to work out why they can't provide programme information on the on-screen display...tut

I phone their bill payment line and pretend to be confused and they transfer me.

Usually goes through a lot more quickly.

Why do Brits put up w/customer service lines that charge you money to phone them?

When you're already paying the company for the service?

Since they changed from Telewest the customer service seems crap - Telewest staff always seemed to answer phones quite quickly and have a good knowledge.

I phone them last week and said I was thinking of cancelling and moving to Sky as they have got a good deal at the moment - they reduced my monthly charge for Broadband, TV - X L package, and phone rental by £19.50pm to £30 pm. The only "catch" is that it is a 12 month contract which is fine as I had no intention of moving to sky anyway!!

Not unreasonabl, but unfortunately lots of companies are the same, including Sky.

Total call took over 40 minutes. Luckily had run through on free phone number to billing area and was then transferred. It's just the time it all takes!!
