What is the creepiest place you've ever been to?

Was just talking about this with DH earlier. I remember going on a visit to Edgehill as a child and finding it really spooky. We'd been watching videos in school about the Civil War and there was talk of the phantom armies etc, so I think it was a combination of that and how strange it was that all these nice quiet green fields were once a battlefield

The second place was a ruined abbey in Ireland. Lovely sunny day when we visited, but my skin was crawling the whole time we were there and I kept feeling as though there was something peeping at me fron behind the walls

@RhiannonOHara was that Christiania in Copenhagen? It's well known for being a very hippy/stoner part of town.

RhiannonOHara · 15/01/2018 17:20

Queen, no, I didn't go to Christiania.

I've just googled it and it was the Meatpacking District, Vesterbro.

I worked for Surrey County Council and was based in County Hall in Kingston. I used to leave the building at night via some back steps to get to the staff car park. The whole stairwell felt wierd and I was too creeped out to look behind me as was sure I was being watched. There is an old court room there and some cells too - it’s used a lot for filming. I did ask the caretaker about it and he said it was haunted. It just had an odd feeling.

The first house me and DH rented. It was on its own in the woods, set back from the road on a country lane. At night the windows always felt like there were faces looking in watching. It was always cold. DH had one of those old fashioned phones, you know that make a tinging bell sound when you place the receiver back in the cradle and it would ring-ting-ting in the middle of the night. Footsteps up and down the stairs all the time. And once heard a bang and went into the office to find a book which had been wedged on the shelf lying open on other side of the room. It had a really oppressive atmosphere, I swear I hardly slept a wink and used to dread bedtime. Moving out was such a happy relief! I'm quite scientific and would try to explain things away when we were there, like the phone thing I told myself was wind moving the telephone wires outside. But that's obviously nonsense.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes - sorry, I was probably a bit cryptic in my post but the original post was a reference to 25 Cromwell Road.

Honeymoon in St Lucia. Luxury resort, sunny, the works. I went for a walk and went into a little hollow of trees set back from the beach. I was immediately uneasy as it was if I'd walked into a funeral parlour. The air seemed heavy and oppressive and I suddenly realised I couldn't hear the birds or the insects. There was just a crushing sadness. Got out into the sunshine as fast as I could. Turns out it was the slaves graveyard from when it had been a plantation. For reference, I'm the least woo bloke ever but there was a real sense of grief there.

Hygge · 15/01/2018 20:05

TooManyButtons - I can imagine that that building is quite creepy if it's abandoned in woodland.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt HMS Victory was oppressive. DH and DS were fine and I'm not sure they were convinced by how bad it made me feel.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes - I don't think the staff were worried by the things they've said were going on at Bolsover, and in particular the little boy doesn't seem to worry anybody. It's made me quite keen to go and have a look around myself.

thelikelylass · 15/01/2018 20:21

The graveyard in Salem - we arrived at sun down on a freezing cold December day, but as we walked in it went very dark and a fog fell. It hovered around the gravestones, all those old stones with long dead 'witches'. It was the stuff of a Stephen King movie!

outofmymind26 · 15/01/2018 20:54

Madmary I know the stretch of road. I hated it as a child too. We used to drive down there every Sunday towards Brighton. We'd start loosing Capital FM at that point too & it used to just feel weird & spooky.

Weirdly my mum & dad both said they saw a married couple run out of the road in front of them whilst they were driving down there one night. It looks a lot less scary now the roads are clearer!

It also freaks me out that after hearing about the ghosts my parents saw, I read that the a22 is also haunted. Far too close to home I hate creepy things 😱

Dipitydoda · 15/01/2018 21:17

A house me and a friend rented.we were running out of time to get somewhere new to live and my housemate found this house. I went to have a look but could only see through the windows, everything told me to run, it felt evil. Whilst living there, I nearly died in a car crash, we were burgaled had all our windows smashed broke up with my bf, major fall out with once best mate haven’t spoken in 20 years Was shaken awake one night with someone whispering my name in my ear. Evil house

LoveMySituation · 15/01/2018 21:31

Gin was the hotel in Tewkesbury the Hop Pole?
Dogmum Harry Tuffins? Used to live in Shropshire, Tuffins has always been a bit odd Grin

Ikabod · 15/01/2018 21:37

I visited a massive abandoned convent in Gloucestershire. It had been a "closed" order. There were things like the elderly nun's walking stick propped up against a chair. It was so big and empty! There had also been an orphanage on site that had been demolished. It was really interesting but these long empty corridors... it was totally reminiscent of the Overlook Hotel from The Shining Confused

Elphame · 15/01/2018 21:47

@whojamaflip

There is an attic in Snowshill which was found to have been full of occult items with occult markings on the floor. It had clearly been used for ceremonial magic at one time. I wonder if it was above the room you found odd?

The room has now been cleared I believe but is not open to the public

Jazzerwoman · 15/01/2018 22:03

Warley Psychiatric Hospital in Essex. My nan was in there for a short while when I was about 12 and I was taken to visit her one dull December day. It was a creepy old building with creepy residents and creepy woods surrounding it. What really creeped me out was seeing a rope hanging from a tree in the woods on our way out Shock

TooManyPaws · 15/01/2018 22:07

Not scary to me, but a bit unusual. We were camping down near Stonehenge for the Summer Solstice and had tickets as a group for a druid ritual in the stones a day or so after Solstice. Gathered just before dawn and went slowly into the stones to wait while the druid order leading the ritual got all their bits and pieces sorted out. It was a bit misty (too misty to see the rising sun ☀!) but it was light enough and I was warm in my wool cloak. My feet were bare on the grass; I shut my eyes and started to ground myself and clear my mind. I heard a low sound of a drum being beaten and some chanting so I opened my eyes as the ritual was obviously starting. Silence. Nobody had a drum ready and the big wigs were still faffing. Shut my eyes, heard the drums and chanting again. Opened them - silence. I just shut my eyes and accepted it until the ritual actually started.

It was rather a good experience, actually!

Delville Wood where I think Sassoon fought in WW1. I was following the Year 11 kids through the wood to the shop and information boards down a ride, and all the hairs stood up on the back of my neck. I could feel the crosshairs of a gun being aimed at me. The kids said they'd never seen me move so fast.

mavornia · 15/01/2018 23:54

Bali. Went there on honeymoon, beautiful hotel and lovely people and yet I felt creeped out the whole time and couldn’t wait to leave. It felt eerie and unnatural and, whilst this sounds ridiculous, the dogs all looked like witches’ familiars.

Ginburee · 16/01/2018 00:43

LoveMySituation I think it was The Tudor house hotel.

RustyPaperclips · 16/01/2018 00:52

I had a recurring dream for months that I was in a particular town. It was a university town but the uni wasn't close to where I was. It's very hard to explain but last year I travelled to Edinburgh and happened to look out the window as the train was pulling into Durham. It was the exact image from my dream. But I've never been to Durham or anywhere close. I didn't even feel scared, just strangely at home

On the same trip I visited the underground vaults in Edinburgh and felt an overwhelming fear that didn't leave me for the rest of the night. I'm not really a woo person but I am open to anything. I used to work in one of the most haunted places in Britain and never experienced anything strange. But I will never go down those vaults again, I felt like I was being suffocated

RustyPaperclips · 16/01/2018 00:56

I have another story but I have told it before and killed the thread. It's not that interesting but has always baffled me

MrsLupo · 16/01/2018 01:09

Oh, come on, Rusty, you can't leave us hanging like that...

RustyPaperclips · 16/01/2018 01:28

Ok, but don't blame me if it's a letdown Wink when I was 15 I stayed at a lovely B&B with my parents near Lynton in Devon.

One evening my dad was driving along a pretty busy road nearby and I remember pointing out a Norman style church in the near distance surrounded by fog, which for some weird reason I felt drawn to.. My mum agreed to drive back down the same road the next day and see if we could find a route to the church. But it wasn't there, all we could see were fields. It has stayed with me to this day and still makes me shiver

I have tried looking up churches in the area over the years but I haven't been able to find the church

RustyPaperclips · 16/01/2018 01:39

Did I kill the thread WinkGrin
