to flip an item for more than the price I bought it for?

I have a luxury item that I was lucky to get from someone who was downsizing her collection.

Now I want to sell it, but not for the price I paid for it -- for that price, I'd rather keep the item.

Should I feel guilty if I list it for a lot more than I paid for it?

Is the 'Someone' a friend? Did you get the item at that price, because she was being kind?

If Yes, your proposed actions are those of a CF and there WILL be a thread about it shortly!

It’s yours. You paid for it. You can do what you like with it.

BarStools · 11/01/2018 10:59

No, the "someone" is an eBay seller who was downsizing her collection (it says so in her listing). I didn't know her personally. I was probably lucky because there were only two bidders, and I won.

Totally fine to flip!

newmumwithquestions · 11/01/2018 11:01

How would that ‘someone’ feel if they knew?

I suspect that that someone is a friend who gave you a marked down price to be nice so you could own something they thought you would like. In which case you would be in the wrong to profit from their generosity.

Sorry - seen your update! Then flip away!

GlitterUnicornsAndAllThatJazz · 11/01/2018 11:02

Its called business

Llangollen · 11/01/2018 11:02

Is the item medicine, or formula, something absolutely essential like that?

If not, of course go for it! Would you sell your house at the price you paid for it, or would you sell it at the much higher current market rate? People do this all the time. If your put your item too high, you won't find a buyer. If someone is ready to pay whatever you ask for, what's the problem?

Northumberlandlass · 11/01/2018 11:03

Following update - flip away! Smile

BarStools · 11/01/2018 11:04

It's a designer bag. I got it from eBay and had it authenticated. I really like it, but don't love it enough and I'd be willing to let i go if I'd profit from it.

It's a collector's piece and in excellent condition. I was really really lucky.

I guess none.

Why on earth would there be a problem with this? Are you that much of an anti capitalist that you grow your own food and always barter? Or do you actually buy from shops who do exactly the same thing you're asking if it's ok to do?

BarStools · 11/01/2018 11:18

Alright - I guess I was feeling guilty about nothing then :)

A purely business decision - buy for X, sell for X + 20% (or better). Go ahead and good luck. I hope you get a good price for it.

Jaxhog · 11/01/2018 11:26

It was a business transaction, so it's fine.
