Ikea furniture...

Is it really just crap?

Looking for baby furniture so it really needs to be absolutely solid.

We had a cheap changing table from there. Was good and solid and did 3 kids.

Crispbutty · 10/01/2018 21:49

I’ve had plenty of ikea furniture and it has always been excellent quality and it lasts.

acornsandnuts · 10/01/2018 21:50

Everything I’ve had is solid. Functional. It solid.

SingingSeuss · 10/01/2018 21:51

Maybe just my putting together skills but I'm with you.....

Llangollen · 10/01/2018 21:52

I love Ikea, and my kids haven't managed to destroy their bedrooms yet.

The only issue is to move, if you dismantle the furniture, they don't work as well the second time round when you try to assemble them. Apart from that, the designs are very clever, and cheap so you can personalize your baby room with more expensive bits.

It's not your baby you need to worry about frankly, it's your toddler. Just make sure, like with everything else, everything is firmly attached to the walls. It's not just an Ikea thing

MikeUniformMike · 10/01/2018 21:53

It's not all crap but a lot of it isn't wood. The wooden stuff tends to be quite flimsy.
You can pick up baby furniture cheaply secondhand or even free on freecycle and freegle.
If you get ikea furniture you will need to fix it to the wall - drawers will all open and tip the chest of drawers if not attached.

DollyDayScream · 10/01/2018 21:54

I think that it is utter shit, certainly not solid.

I'd much prefer to buy something of solid wood.

ExoticShorthair · 10/01/2018 21:56

My ikea wardrobe is falling apart at the back! All of the drawers I've had from Ikea have been terrible too!

I do love their square storage units you add the wee slip on boxes too, never had a problem with them. Or my foldaway table, shelves and coffee table.

pandarific · 10/01/2018 21:57

Ikea like most places do some great solid wood things and some not so great things.

I have an excellent mdf double bed with drawers underneath, a solid wooden chest of drawers and a solid wooden stepladder all of which are excellent.

pandarific · 10/01/2018 21:59

I think part of why it’s so good is you get to go and look at the furniture before you buy it.

sleepyhead · 10/01/2018 22:01

We had an Ikea cot for ds2. Did him 3 years and was good as new when we passed it on.

It was half the price of ds1's John Lewis cot which didn't survive a house move.

Llangollen · 10/01/2018 22:02

It's common sense, not an Ikea thing! Pretty much any chest of drawers can collapse when a child start climbing. It's so dangerous to minimise the risks.
(Maybe not all, but we are talking Next/Argos/Debenhams etc. furniture..)

metacrisis · 10/01/2018 22:06

Some of it is solid wood. Ikea have a huge range from very cheap to quite expensive, in everything. You can buy a cot for 20 pounds or spend 150 pounds easily, the first will be a lot less solid than the latter.

Butteredparsn1ps · 10/01/2018 22:09

Depends what you buy as they do both wooden furniture and chipboard/MDF to suit different peoples needs and budgets.

Looking for baby furniture so it really needs to be absolutely solid
Is it a very large baby then?

tuttifritti · 10/01/2018 22:09

Some crap, some awesome stuff. Would go for it. The kids section in general (toys, cups, plates) offers more stylish, higher quality and cheaper products than some traditional suppliers.

SusieOwl4 · 10/01/2018 22:19

It’s normally very solid and good quality . I have a wardrobe which is very old and I can’t really justify getting rid of it because it is heavy , well built and still in perfect condition.

Crispbutty · 10/01/2018 22:20

All the stuff I have is solid wood.

Timefortea99 · 10/01/2018 22:22

We got a desk and shelving from their for our home office about 10 years ago. Really good quality. They are good for a lot more years yet.

WillowWept · 10/01/2018 22:22

It's a huge range but they definitely have some decent pieces. W

The high chair is one of the best that you can buy.

suzy2b · 10/01/2018 22:25

when i lived in stockholm three quarters of people's houses were furnished from Ikea

paranoidpammywhammy2 · 10/01/2018 22:26

The only problem I've had is paint flaking off a few times. Everything else has been fantastic.

I have some friends that don't have much luck with Ikea but they really suck at diy and don't tighten up screws enough or assemble them properly following the instructions.

Passmethecrisps · 10/01/2018 22:27

If you look hard enough you can find some excellent stuff. It certainly isn’t all crap at all.

MadeleineMaxwell · 10/01/2018 22:27

We had DS's (2.5) bedroom kitted out with Ikea furniture from the start. Cot, which is now a bed, changing table, wardrobe and rocking chair. It's all perfectly fine so long as you lash it to the wall.

I second the high chair.

suzy2b · 10/01/2018 22:28

Forgot to add i have a kitchen table from ikea bought it over 30yrs ago still going strong as is a bed although not in use now in loft

PiggyPlumPie · 10/01/2018 22:28

We've got a wardrobe that is 16 years old, survived two house moves, three children have used it and it's still in great condition.
