To ask if there's a job could I do from home?

NomsQualityStreets · 10/01/2018 20:32

I know I'm clutching at straws but we really need the extra income but can't afford the childcare at the moment.

Unfortunately I don't have any qualifications apart from my GCSEs (well over 5 with English and Maths) and A levels.
I am bilingual and perfectly fluent in both English and my native language.

I've worked mainly in customer service and admin roles in the past.
I'm not interested in any catalogue stuff or MLM I don't think they're feasible.
Just some potential genuine jobs or something I could look into.

Is there anything at all out there?

With two languages yes there is a good chance you can work from home. Have a look at some language recruitment agencies

aliceinwanderland · 10/01/2018 20:34

Freelance translation
Remote PA?

Hoppinggreen · 10/01/2018 20:34

There ARE some legitimate work form home opportunities ( although there are many scams too). However, I would be very surprised if you could do them with children at home

retirednow · 10/01/2018 21:12

I was going to say translation too. The NHS run a telephone translation service, I don't know how it works but you could probably find out if you rang your local hospital.

retirednow · 10/01/2018 21:16

It's called LanguageLine, they have a website.

catgirl1976 · 10/01/2018 21:18

Have a look on People Per Hour - you can offer your services as a translator on there

MojoMoon · 10/01/2018 21:20

What about working evenings/weekends? (Assuming your partner works weekday days).

He has the kids while you work and vice versa.

You can't really work with small children at home...older ones who can reliably entertain themselves for a few hours at a time are feasible.

Possibly some typing up of notes type services? Medical secretaries do that sort of thing, typing up recorded notes from doctors.

I’ve worked as a virtual pa for 2 years and it’s been hard going, I’m now concentrating my efforts on growing OHs business over the next 18 months.

Have a google of VA agencies. They’ll interview you and then if you have the qualifications and equipment they recommend, if they like you they’ll offer you the chance to ‘bid’ for jobs.

This is a slow way to start, and you’d do it on a self employed status.

I found insoent a lot of time bidding and getting nowhere, by the time you’d read the client brief (they match the client to you and x amount of others) the job had been snatched up.

There are pluses though, you log your time and you’re paid for exactly what you work, just remember to put HMRCs portion to one side.

tillytoodles1 · 11/01/2018 18:56

My daughter is a travel agent working from home. Quite a few of her friends with older kids do it too.

drigon · 12/01/2018 01:52

Try Upwork...I'm a freelance translator too, as well as doing other bits like proofreading. Not brilliant pay, though.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 12/01/2018 02:00

tilly how did your daughter get into that? Is she self employed or with an agency?

MistressDeeCee · 12/01/2018 03:32

I've a couple of acquaintances who work from home as self-employed travel agents. I'd like to hear more about it too. I've heard it from them of course but an unbiased view would be great

Definitely look into translation and also transcription. If you are fluent in multiple languages, you would make good earnings doing simultaneous transcription/translation.

I used to do transcription freelance from home (it's boring as hell and you won't easily be able to do it while caring for children as you need quiet and concentration, but you can get up in the early mornings and do it or in the evenings or during nap time), but there is always a high demand for multi-lingual transcriptionists and the pay is better. You might start by looking to get some work through an agency. But also once you get some experience, find ways to advertise your services direct to potential clients. The agencies do not pay nearly as much as what you could make on your own, which would be probably 3-4x more. But they will get you work if you don't know where to look for it. Local universities or anywhere that research is going on is a good place, companies doing market research are also a good place, but harder to find unless you know who to approach.

Beyond that, do you have any skills you could teach or use to make things to sell? Or be a virtual personal assistant?

Evelynismyformerspyname · 12/01/2018 13:42

The other ideas are great, and you probably don't want to child mind, but it is one job you really can do when caring for your own children at the same time (as long as you don't have 3 or more under 5 of your own) and you probably already have most of the equipment if you're own children are still young enough for childcare to be your issue.

I became a childminder when I went back to work then realised I didn't want to put my own dc1 into childcare, and it was awesome - made me parent DD better too as you tend to be more reflective about how you spend your days when responsible for other people's kids alongside your own. Also meant she always had company Mon - Fri and wasn't really an "only" so sharing me wasn't really a shock when dc2 came along!

TalkinBoutWhat · 12/01/2018 13:43

I second UpWork as it is quite good. However, when you first start out you will only be able to charge very low rates. Once you build up your rating, you can then start to increase your rate and bid for the better jobs. With the higher rating you will also be approached directly by those looking for. Once you get to 90% (based on hours worked, feedback, response time etc) you meet the criteria for the better work.

rockcity · 12/01/2018 13:43

Translation

RitasEducation · 12/01/2018 17:26

Chatlines seem to be popular to do from home, if you have the stomach for it. Grin
