Not really an AIBU just something that made me think.
I saw my colleague who won the Christmas cake I made in the charity raffle just before we broke up for the holidays. She told me how much they all enjoyed the cake and then said that her family "couldn't believe a homemade cake could be so nice, they all thought it was shop bought."
Very flattering and all but shouldn't it be the other way round? I expect homemade to be nicer than shop bought. When did expectations flip round so that it was better if from a supermarket?

Calling it shop bought is a huge insult Smile

DD refuses to eat shop cakes as she can taste the chemicals in them, however she makes a fantastic sponge,as good as my MiLs .I am the queen of fruit cake though, everyone says they're the best they've ever tasted and even my fruit cake hating SiL says it's not bad and he could manage a small slice

She probably comes from a non cooking family.

If you are not a good baker then its obvious that bought ones will taste better than your home made ones. Lets face it, not everyone is very good. I have a collegue who is always bringing in cakes etc and going on about how homemade is so much better than shop bought...but hers are not! they are terrible, and I'd rather have something from a bakery or even Tesco.

It depends on the cook.
If you have ever seen some of the bonkers FB cooking groups you'll understand why bought food is better.
