To find this woman odd

Walking down the street just now my cat always follows me slightly down the road (I tell her to go home) anyway round the corner comes a woman with a huge dog. So obvious there's a confrontation between the two which I get is normal but the woman begins laughing her head off at the dog trying to attack my cat! Even my 3 year old was visibly scared but the woman was just laughing aibu to find this odd?!

She is a nut, how is that funny?

MiddleClassProblem · 10/01/2018 15:32

It could be a nervous, anxious reaction. It could be that she thought it was funny. Hard to say.

MiddleClassProblem · 10/01/2018 15:33

I should point out the latter is twatty but def not unheard of. It’s jist a step up from you’ve been framed.

maddnessintheroost · 10/01/2018 15:51

As a responsible cat and dog owner I would correct my dog if she did that

meredintofpandiculation · 10/01/2018 15:55

Unpleasant but far from unknown for dog owners to be proud of their dog's ability to see off cats, so I'd not be surprised at the reaction (but it would not endear me to the dog owner). To be fair, I've heard cat owners brag of their cats' ability to hold their own against dogs.

Heartoffire · 10/01/2018 15:56

Well if it was on a lead he couldn’t do much damage could he? Not really funny though

Jassylaunderette · 10/01/2018 15:57

That is very odd. Did you say something?

DeputyBrennan · 10/01/2018 16:12

I’m quite an anxious/nervous person, and often my first reaction to being taken by surprise is laughter. Not always the most appropriate reaction, I understand.

I would have been surprised to round a corner and for me and my dog to come face to face with a cat, as they usually keep out the way of dogs, so I could well imagine nervous laughter being my possible (inappropriate) reaction in this situation. My dog is always under my control, so I would know that your cat wouldn’t be at risk of actual harm, as long as it didn’t actually leap on top of my dog or anything like that. Not a nice thing for you and your child to witness though.

DeputyBrennan · 10/01/2018 16:15

Though of course, maybe this woman was just a bit of a dickhead.

ravenmum · 10/01/2018 16:22

Maybe she was just laughing because cats are not normally supposed to go for a walk with their owner, so she was surprised at that, and amused by the speed at which your cat vanished, or maybe because the cat didn't run off?
Our cat sometimes walks with me and our dog in the evenings, and when we bump into another dog, our dog defends the cat by barking madly at the other dog, while the cat just stands stlll with his back arched and fur on end. One man was so amused he captured it all on video!

fannyfelcher · 10/01/2018 16:30

Keep your cat indooors, or in a cat rpoofed garden. That way you can save it from such events, protect wildlife AND avoid it being hit by a car. It is the responsible thing to do.

kmc1111 · 10/01/2018 16:35

Did she have control of the dog?

I often laugh at my big friendly dog when she tries to make friends with another dog, or a cat, or often a squirrel or bird. She's not trying to attack anything, and I always have her completely under control and at enough of a distance, but since she's a big staffy I guess some people would take her delight at encountering another animal as threatening. I'm used to her though, so I just find her enthusiasm funny. She just wants to cuddle and play. Again, I don't let her, and she's extremely well trained, but I'm not going to check her when she's not doing anything wrong other than being visibly happy.

treeofhearts · 10/01/2018 16:44

I often laugh when my dog tries to go for next doors cat. She just gives him a look of such utter contempt, presents her arse to him and saunters off. It's such a blatant "fuck you" that I can't help it.

Littlewhistle · 10/01/2018 16:49

My neighbours laugh their moronic heads off any time a dog scares or chases my cat away.

goose1964 · 10/01/2018 17:13

Sometimes the opposite happens ,I was walking down a path near my house when a woman cones around the corner with a great dane who was wimpering ,shaking and seemed unable to walk, the woman said to me don't worry he's just seen a cat

ThisLittleKitty · 10/01/2018 17:52

It wasn't a nervous laugh she was literally cackling! The dog was also not being friendly. Just the first time I've seen anything like it so surprised me! Yes it's so funny that your dogs trying to attack my cat. Confused
