Upset that parents won't get a flu jab

They are both entitled to it but are spouting anti Vax stuff and won't get it. Aibu to push them to get it? They are saying the Australian flu could kill tens of thousandsSad

The flu jab does not provide coverage for Aussie flu so pointless for your reason.

Overthehillsandfaraway8 · 09/01/2018 08:50

It's their choice, not yours!!

Mishappening · 09/01/2018 08:51

We are entitled to flu jab and have it every year. Because of my OH's illness it is unlikely that he could survive flu. There is nothing you can do if they refuse to have it. I think they are unwise.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 09/01/2018 08:53

arnoldbee you're incorrect!

MrsFantastic · 09/01/2018 08:54

I looked it up, the flu jab does cover Australian flu.

Fekko · 09/01/2018 08:56

They don't want flu! A young and fit relative got it (real flu) a couple of years ago and it completely knackered his lungs. He is entitled to get the jab from the doctors now.

The pharmacy told me that the ones the nhs is giving out doesn’t cover all the main strains doing the rounds just now. Not sure if that’s true or not.

LaurieFairyCake · 09/01/2018 08:56

Depends on age - it's proving ineffective for over 65's from what I read

Whatslovegottodo · 09/01/2018 08:59

You can't push adults into anything however much you may feel they should.
Also flu vaccines are notoriously poor at protecting against current strains as they are usually based on last seasons strains, which mutate and evolve. I remember this clearly being the case a few years ago, I am not up to date with this years one so don't know, I could also get the jag free of charge but choose not to.

CosmicCanary · 09/01/2018 09:01

Yes YABU.
They are adults and unless they have a condition that means they are incapable of managing their own health care you cannot badger them in to doing what you feel is best for them.

Homemadearmy · 09/01/2018 09:02

My friend had the flu jab this year. She still got the flu and was ill all over Christmas.

Scribblegirl · 09/01/2018 09:03

YABU but I totally get why you'd want them to. I'm a healthy 28 year old but my dad has MS so we all make a point of getting the jab. Flu kills.

cindersrella · 09/01/2018 09:04

I was reading yesterday that's it's 40-60% effective on certain strains... I think the strains are the ones that are they worse from last year. Unfortunately it's there choice... some people feel the flu vaccine makes them feel worse when they have it?

Scribblegirl · 09/01/2018 09:04

(I know there's still a chance of catching it even with the jab but it seems a no brainer to me that you'd do all you could to avoid it)

PinkChestnut · 09/01/2018 09:05

I read just yesterday the flu jab only 30-40% effective so still not a guarantee.

SuperBeagle · 09/01/2018 09:10

Well, it didn't kill tens of thousands here in Australia, and our vaccine didn't protect against it.

MargaretCavendish · 09/01/2018 09:10

I read just yesterday the flu jab only 30-40% effective so still not a guarantee.

But even if it was only 5% effective it is free and harmless (it makes some people feel a bit tired for a day), so why wouldn't you reduce a risk that, if you're in a vulnerable group, might kill you or make you seriously ill? Surely a slight reduction is better than none?

Charolais · 09/01/2018 09:10

I had a flu jab about 5 yrs ago and it made my auto-immune disease so much worse. I really regret letting the doctor talk me into it. My poor arm was swollen and painful for a few years after it.

I never get colds (or flu) anymore anyway. The last time I had either was in 1994.

BWatchWatcher · 09/01/2018 09:10

There are multiple strains of flu. The flu jab covers the ones they thought were going to rise to the surface this year. It is perfectly possible to get the flu jab and then get another strain of flu.
It is also possible to get the flu jab and get a horrible fucking cold that feels like flu but isn't.

LaurieFairyCake · 09/01/2018 09:13

I was really ill for a week within hours of having the jab a couple of years ago. It didn't agree with me.

Shadow666 · 09/01/2018 09:14

It’s their life I’m afraid. I thought you were going to say you or your child was immune compromised, in that case I’d say you were being reasonable in insisting on it. The flu jab is one of the less effective immunizations unfortunately. We still get it but we all still came down with the flu last year.

uglyflowers · 09/01/2018 09:15

Does the nasal spray for children cover the Aussie flu strain?

Fatso1978 · 09/01/2018 09:16

Where are all the tens of thousands dead here in Australia from this flu? We hardly heard it mentioned all winter. I recall one news report telling people had been sick, but it was one report. Nothing more.

Quite a lot of drama.

Llangollen · 09/01/2018 09:16

I did try to research, and what comes up is that our NHS jab doesn't protect against the Autralia flu anyway.

The jab is also given to the younger primary school children, but not the slightly older ones. The whole thing does not make any sense. When many doctors and health professional refuse to get it, it doesn't make you very confident, sorry.

Buck3t · 09/01/2018 09:17

I have asthma, I don't get the flu jab. My dad gets the flu jab and gets sick every year. I exercise 5-6 times a week, I eat fresh (as possible) fruit and veg I take vitamins. I avoid people who I know to be sick. If I still get flu after all of that, it was meant to be.

What I have learnt is that not every body reacts the same to everything. I am healthy, no need to try to make myself any healthier.

Further, this year's flu jab, absolutely does not cover the Aussie flu, much less all possible strains. The Aussie flu was/is the most dangerous and that's the first thing they said when it came out.

shillwheeler · 09/01/2018 09:17

YANBU. But as they are adults, however, misguided their decision is, it's their decision. Not much you can do.
