But should me and my colleagues be so involved in directors life?

I work for a small family run firm. This is the first time I’ve had a role in a small firm, as apposed to large companies.

My job role requires me and my colleagues to often work one on one with our directors (husband and wife) often spending long car journeys with either of them or perhaps work functions or meals etc.

There has been times where we have been out and about during the day (not on my own, me and my director) and had to go via their sons school to pick him up, drop his daughters tennis rackets to her school as she’s forgotten them, pick up his dog from the vet, drop the daughter to horse riding, the latest thing I had to wait in the car whilst my director went into a clothing store to complain about her latest purchase.

This isn’t too much of a problem but I find it slighty strange and often this makes me late home but I have never once complained about it.

They also slate each other into the ground. This isn’t even work related slating, this is full on bold statements about how the other is a “shit wife” or moaning about each others habits at home, often disclosing quite personal information.

I suppose it doesn’t really cause too much of an issue and I get the job done but I do find this all slightly strange at times. Does anyone else have a similar scenario?

That is very strange and I'd be looking for another job pronto. Good luck OP

I used to work for a firm like this and unfortunately I think it’s par for the course. Honestly, I’d never work for a family firm again, I much prefer a ‘professional’ environment.

It’s a shame as I love my job - Only downside

I worked in a similar environment. Husband yelling down the phone calling his wife s stupid bitch. Both sodding off on family holidays at the same time. Trying to pass the buck of managing me on to each other.

In my current company we have had a couple of family employees too. One guy's mum in HR, and the founder's son.

It's better, but nothing has changed my mind that family and business don't mix.
