To worry that my iPhone charger is going to electrocute me?

Every iPhone charger I have had has bent and frayed in a way that exposes wires. I'm terrified I'm going to get electrocuted. AIBU?!

Buy a new charger when this starts to happen, and review the way you use them.

trinity0097 · 08/01/2018 21:40

You get rid of it when it starts to get damaged.

Have you tried some of the more flexible types?

ManchesterGin · 08/01/2018 21:41

My Samsung charger looks like this and I have the same worry so YANBU however I don't seem to be worried enough to do anything about it!! Blush

Iliketeabagging · 08/01/2018 21:43

You can't get electrocuted from 5 volts.

Badgoushk · 08/01/2018 21:43

cardibach, I just plug it into my phone at the bedside. I don't think I manhandle it in any way. I never take it out of the home or have it in a bag full of stuff where it could get damaged.

Iliketeabagging, please can you elaborate. Presume I know nothing about it! Thanks.

I'd bin it. My Samsung charger got frayed and gave me a small shock. Binned it straight away.

jay55 · 08/01/2018 21:45

I like the £3 cables from Tiger, they don't fray like the apple ones and are nice and long.

TheFlis12345 · 08/01/2018 21:45

Buy an Anker cable, they are way cheaper and far more durable.

thelastredwinegum · 08/01/2018 21:46

I've replaced my cables with braided ones, seem to last better and you can get them in different lengths.

stickytoffeevodka · 08/01/2018 21:47

None of mine have ever done that - what are you doing to them?!

Are you using your phone charging in bed so the cable is bent for a long period of time?

MaitlandGirl · 08/01/2018 21:48

Mine used to do that until I wrapped electrical tape around the top couple of inches of the cable.

It’s from where they’ve been charging on the side of the nightstand and the cable hangs over at a right angle. The top of the cable is a weak spot.

The safest thing to do would be to get a docking base and not charge through a cable.

Badgoushk · 08/01/2018 21:54

MaitlandGirl, yes I suppose I do have it in that position with the lead dropping down. I thought they should be more robust than that!

AccrualIntentions · 08/01/2018 21:56

YY to Anker, they are way longer too.

gamerchick · 08/01/2018 21:58

I’d be more worried about them setting fire to the bed tbh. The usual culprit is using the phone while it’s on charge.

Don’t leave it on charge overnight (silly thing to do anyway) and charge on a clear hard surface like the kitchen bench.

Squeegle · 08/01/2018 22:03

Apparently the biggest cause of fires now is phone chargers so do change it if frays like that.

MaitlandGirl · 08/01/2018 22:19

Badgoushk you’d think so wouldn’t you! My cynical side thinks it’s a sales ploy so you have to keep replacing the cables.

I tried braided cables but my phone wouldn’t recognise them so now I get out the electrical tape before I use the cable for the first time.

VivaLeBeaver · 08/01/2018 22:22

Sugu also works well for this problem.

I use the amazon own brand cables now and iPhone recognises them ok.

SimonBridges · 08/01/2018 22:24

The cable is just a cable.
All the handling of the charge is in the plug bit.
Never ever ever ever buy a cheap plug. They are a fire hazard.
As for the lead it really doesn’t matter.
The plug converts it from 240 volts to 5 volts. You don’t fuck about with that. The cable just transfers that charge.

I agree though, what are you doing to it?
I’ve had numerous iPhones, iPads and iPods and I’ve never had a cable do this.

Badgoushk · 08/01/2018 22:47

SimonBridges, how funny, all of mine have done this. My husband's ones look far worse!

malmi · 08/01/2018 22:53

5V is not enough to electrocute you unless you are a very weak rodent maybe. The fire risk is real though. Replace.

Rascallsall · 08/01/2018 22:53

I had a cable that looked like this. Returned it to an Apple store (without a receipt) recently and said I thought it was dangerous. I was asked how long I had had it, replied no idea. It was replaced free of charge as my safety was paramount 😁

Badgoushk · 08/01/2018 23:52

Thanks everyone. I have ordered new chargers because of the fire risk.

Another reason I hate fucking Apple. I took dc's iPad charger cable back as it had frayed and got charged twenty quid for a new one. Not even including a plug; just the cable. TWENTY QUID. They are robbing arseholes. DH and I have had Samsung for years and have never had a problem with any of the myriad chargers we've used.
