To consider getting a ‘work out your colours’ as a birthday gift

A present for a female family member.
I don’t know anyone that has had it done, but the birthday recipient has mentioned this is the past.
Are they a load of old twadle and a waste of money, or would this be a nice gift?

Mumsnet gives me such a weird insight into people's thoughts. Would people REALLY be offended if someone bought them this, actually offended? I get that some people would be quite "meh" about it, but where is the offense? It reminds me of a woman I worked with years ago who said that they would be offended if they were bought smellies as a secret santa gift as it implied that they had bad personal hygiene!
Anyways, I had my colours done by a friend who's one of the CMB consultants. It was quite good fun, and whilst it mainly confirmed that the colours I chose were the right ones for me, it's also made me think more about things that I buy. That means less "impulse" purchases, which can only be a good thing.
Lighten up, MN!

I would hate it. I love clothes and fashion and would consider this dull and pedestrian. Take your relative to the Balenciaga exhibition at the V&A if she is into fashion. She will love it.

RestingGrinchFace · 08/01/2018 00:58

I would have no time for something like that myself. If she really wanted she would have had it done.

violetbunny · 08/01/2018 05:42

I would love this! Love clothes and makeup anyway though.

TheQueenOfWands · 08/01/2018 05:47

Christ, how tedious.

That's not a gift, that's just something else they have to bung on their 'to do' list.

catwoozle · 08/01/2018 05:48

It would say to me that someone thinks I look shit in what I wear currently.

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/01/2018 06:24

I would love it. These sort of things interest me. I know someone who had it done and only wears the recommended colours. If you go together that would be great if it’s something they’ve expressed an interest in doing.

specialsubject · 08/01/2018 09:36

I wouldnt be offended but I would never use it as I can't think of a less interesting way to spend time.

Archietheinventor · 08/01/2018 09:41

‘Dull & pedestrian’ - how nice Hmm

Not sure a trip to the V&A is quite as accessible to most...

SaucyJack · 08/01/2018 09:45

I'd be a bit Hmm, but my style is (and always has been) very dark and grungy- so it'd be hard not to see it as yet another dig about wearing black all the time.

SpottedOnMN · 08/01/2018 09:46

Colour Me Beautiful were really good and the little book of swatches they give you is great to take shopping.

ittakes2 · 08/01/2018 09:52

I did this and found it so useful that I then took my children to have their colours done. I offered to pay for my sister-n-law to be to have it done before her wedding. It’s a great gift - but I would ask the revoient if it’s something they would like before you booked it.

ittakes2 · 08/01/2018 09:55

By the way, I’m not into clothes at all and I don’t wear make up. In fact I hate clothes shopping...but this is exactly one of the reasons why i found it helpful. Consultant was able to show me which colours lifted my features and why - so now I don’t waste time or money buying clothes unsuitable for me.

berwickswan · 08/01/2018 10:11

Another thumbs up for colour me beautiful and the little booklet of colour swatches. This was years ago and I've still got the colour swatches in my wallet. I've quite a strong sense of which styles suit me but now that most of my clothes shopping is of the charity shop variety it really saves me time as I go through the racks Smile
The consultation was a birthday gift from my sister, btw.
Thanks,sis. Great present!

dontquotemeondailymail · 08/01/2018 10:28

It just makes me think of Bridget Jones's mother!

It would be a no for me, I would just see it as something to go and listen to the spiel, but then forget the minute I came out.

eastlondoner · 08/01/2018 12:55

I had this done ages ago. I didn't pay for it but I can 100% say that it's a waste of money. I wouldn't buy it as a gift for someone unless they directly asked for it.

I would love it but lots of people wouldn't. I think you need to have a vague conversation with her and get a feel for how it would land.

wisterialanes · 18/01/2018 18:42

I'm surprised this is still a 'thing'. I remember 20 years ago this being a trend but haven't heard of it since. How much does it cost? What exactly goes on for them to work out your colours?

CorbynsBumFlannel · 18/01/2018 18:51

If you think they'd like it then go for it but it seems a waste of money to me.
You know what colours suit you just from looking in the mirror and seeing what looks good and what doesn't don't you? My wardrobe is mostly black, white and red. I don't suit blue things at all.
Dh suits dark colours like dark green, brown and navy.

GeneHuntsMistress · 18/01/2018 19:39

What exactly is that they do - is it just draping lots of different colour fabrics on you for an hour? Surely that would only take 15 mins max. Is there anything else to it?

VileyRose · 18/01/2018 19:41

I love it and got a she swatch. Made so much difference.

It's not twaddle. Colour theory is scientific, people do have cool/neutral/warm tones and certain colours will look better on them. But anyone can call themselves a colour consultant or stylist or whatever, so you have to find someone who knows what they're doing.

If this person has spoken positively about the whole 'find your colours' thing then I think this gift would be well-received. I'd just make sure to explain you thought she'd be interested rather than you thought she needed it.

hannahintheworks · 18/01/2018 20:07

If you’re friend has mentioned it and seemed keen then it is a great gift idea.

My mum bought this for me as a 21st birthday present, and it was interesting but I hate shopping and am not really in to fashion so it was a bit wasted on me! But my colours will never change and perhaps when I am older and have more cash to spend on clothes then it will come in handy!
