To ask for help pricing my artwork?

Name change for this (it's all very outing).

I'm a teacher, but have always enjoyed painting as a hobby. I painted a watercolour for my god daughter's Christmas present and enjoyed it so much that I started doing more. A few friends/acquaintances have asked for commissions and I'm struggling to price my paintings.

I'm teach full time, so don't have time to do a lot at the moment (of anything!), but I'm starting to dream that maybe one day, I could launch a website and actually do this for a job (my husband says I must be realistic- I get carried away with these things!)

So my question is- please can you help me price my art? How much would you pay for original personalised watercolours?

Not really an AIBU, but posted for traffic as someone has asked for a quote for the fox and I don't know what to say yet!

The space under both wreath paintings is for a name.
Thank you!

They look very nice. I would probably pay about £30 each framed.

RabbitsPikasAndHares · 07/01/2018 00:57

I think etsy and promoting via instagram would be a good way to start.

I think the mount colour is wrong, your paper is off white, and the bright white and black is too harsh for a watercolour. Even if you're using off the shelf frames it would be worth going to a framers to get a better idea of mounts to compliment the work.

For prints you can reference Desenio for their pricing:
desenio.co.uk/en/artiklar/posters-/top-list/index.html

I can also buy similar style A4 prints from Girl Visual for 3 for £14 or A3 at 3 for £30. So although 1 for £15 as you suggested isn’t expensive, your competitors may snatch a sale by having bundle deals. (Also bare in mind canvas walls / clusters of prints are v popular right now)

NotGoodMika · 07/01/2018 05:47

Sell prints, I know a girl who pencil draws animals, sets them in small Ikea box frames and sells each one for £6-8 . These are prints...sells hundreds at craft fairs, the large country fair type ones. As well as mugs t shirts commissions etc . Also Etsy, I would suggest. And notonthehighstreet do buy fr9m artists/ crafts people, it’s on their site.

Supermagicsmile · 07/01/2018 07:22

I would pay around £15 :) love them!

MotherCupboard · 07/01/2018 07:29

Id pay £30-£40 for the originals and maybe £15 for a personalised print? I absolutely love them and if i had any money to spare id be in touch asking for a commission so there's definitely a market!

ToesInWater · 07/01/2018 07:41

I guess you could sell them at a market for 20 quid framed - you might find people who think they are cute. Way too generic for my taste but I am not in the market for twee paintings for a small child's room so I might be totally wrong.

givemesteel · 07/01/2018 07:43

I would say £40-50 plus p&p,after all it is framed.

It depends on how quickly you can make them whether that is worth it, I guess if you do a load in one go then you can just add names later.

Etsy and not on high st are good bets.

You'd get more if you make it clear you will do personalised designs, eg for a kid that loves owls or ones which depict a country they're from (eg kangaroos and koalas for an Australian kid). Could maybe mock up a couple of larger / bespoke ones and those would prob sell for £100+.

PavlovaPlease · 07/01/2018 08:31

Prints or greeting cards on etsy would be a good way to go (your work is gorgeous). You can print these yourself as a pp said. You could also do craft fairs and think about getting your own website (etsy take a cut).

londonrach · 07/01/2018 08:50

£15-20 maybe. Try local facebook, etsy or country fairs.

I wouldnt buy them as pay £5-£10 for original old oil paintings from 1930s in local antique centre. Prefer the colour they used back then. Mind you we did push the boat out the other day for £25 for a large oil painting. Love it. We usually choose country scenes.

However youve talent and alot of people like them. Might be an idea to go greeting cards etc. (I have trouble drawing a stick man so no artist talent)

Cakemadeoffruit · 07/01/2018 09:13

I think they're lovely and would pay about £15 for a signed print. However I'd stay away from the generic IKEA frames, as they suggest it's something you could make yourself with any old postcard.

My us we have local artist groups who display art and sell them.

A couple of craft/gift shops do a 'rent a shelf' deal. That way they get lots of changing stock and the artist gets a base to display their items. Commission I presume is negotiable.

Some pubs/libraries have art on their walls which is up for sale. Again they have a changing display as work is sold and updated. Presumably they take a commission from each sale.

I really like these for a children's room, something to be bought on Etsy or at a craft fair. I think I'd spend up to £40. You'll probably get the most for them if you offer them framed even in a cheap frame from ikea.

YellowMakesMeSmile · 07/01/2018 10:44

I'd say £10 - £15. They are really cute but I don't think they are professional looking. More of a talented amateur. I'm not knocking them though

I thought the same. They are cute but a little generic. Nice for craft sales and School fairs.

babybobobear · 07/01/2018 13:04

Wow I love them OP!!

namechangerandomnumbers2 · 07/01/2018 21:41

Thank you so much for all of your help and feedback. Some really useful tips to act on and I've got a good grasp of how to price things from now on.

3luckystars · 07/01/2018 21:45

They are lovely!! I really like the fox.

I would pay 20 for a print of that, but if it is original art work then its worth a lot more. Best wishes and well done, they are very good!

Noofly · 07/01/2018 21:52

I bought something similar from an art exhibition by a local art club. I paid £40 for a framed picture.

TheKitchenWitch · 09/01/2018 10:56

This has been a really useful thread. It's given me a bit of a kick to get on and do something I've been meaning to get around to for ages.

OP your paintings are lovely, I shall look out for them on etsy :)
